The tactical shooter Valorant has now officially launched and comes with a new game mode. Spike Rush is perfect for newcomers and players who prefer shorter rounds.
What kind of mode is this? In Spike Rush, everything happens much faster than in the normal game mode of Valorant:
- All players fight with the same random weapon.
- You all receive the basic abilities of the various agents for free.
- A round starts with a 25-second “Barrier Phase” instead of the “Buy Phase”.
- The round itself lasts a maximum of 1 minute and 20 seconds.
- One team needs 4 wins to win a match.
- There are 3 to 5 different power-ups such as faster movement or more damage per round, which also make them shorter.
A match in Spike Rush should last between 8 and 15 minutes. So if you don’t want to invest 30+ minutes in a regular match, you can let loose in the new fun mode.
When does the mode come out? The mode has already been introduced on June 2 with the release of Valorant.

Short rounds are good, but the mode is receiving criticism
How is the mode being received? On Reddit, Spike Rush is getting mixed feedback. The basic idea of faster modes is well received. But many would have liked a bit more variety and less focus on abilities:
- So writes Taylor1350: “We wanted a mode with fast and constant gunplay. Instead, we got a mode that promotes even more spam with abilities. They make the rounds shorter, but still have 25 seconds of buy time, which is nonsensical. Reduce it to 15 so the gates can open faster. Hopefully, Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch will come soon.
- Also, frankkoarg is not convinced: “Wow, this is honestly disappointing. It doesn’t look fun at all, it’s just a normal match with pre-defined weapons and power-up orbs.”
The reddit user gottago173 describes in a reply why he thinks the mode is good:
- “[It feels like a normal match] until you realize that a normal match lasts 30-40 minutes. And when you’re really getting stomped, it’s hell. This mode is just fun and for casuals. Something that the beta sorely lacked.”
Who is the mode worth it for? Due to the short rounds and the few wins needed, Spike Rush plays much faster. This is especially helpful when you don’t have much time.
Additionally, the mode is great for beginners who want to try out the different weapons and abilities and get a feel for the game. While you can also try a lot in the “Practice Mode”, this happens in a real scenario with other players.
