Valorant received a new game mode called “Spike Rush” at its official release. This mode differs in several ways from regular Valorant and particularly delights MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn. Find out here why you should play this mode too.
What is Spike Rush? Spike Rush is an alternative game mode that was introduced with the release of Valorant. Unlike a regular round of Valorant, which can last 40 minutes or longer, a Spike Rush round is over in about 10 minutes or less. This is due to the following reasons:
- Each round, a weapon is randomly selected, and each player (including opponents) only has that weapon
- All skills of your agents (except Ultimate) are fully charged each round
- Each kill grants 2 points for your Ultimate.
- All attackers automatically have the Spike
- The round time is a maximum of 80 seconds. During this time, the attackers must either plant the Spike or eliminate all opponents.
- The team that first has 4 wins wins the entire match
- There are useful power-ups scattered around the map.
Spike Rush offers some differences from regular Valorant. I, Jürgen Horn from MeinMMO, find the new mode especially suited and have been playing it almost exclusively since it was introduced. The following reasons should also encourage you to dedicate more time to this mode.
1 – Spike Rush is good for beginners
Here’s why newcomers should play Spike Rush: In Spike Rush, you have a stripped-down version of Valorant. There’s never a question of which loadout to buy or whether to go for a “full buy” round, where you fully equip yourself, or an eco round, where you buy nothing or only cheap equipment.
Additionally, all skills of your agents are automatically equipped, and players can freely experiment without the fear of wasting an expensive skill that must be repurchased in the next round.
So, anyone wanting to calmly try out the mechanics of Valorant can do so here without any problems.
2 – Spike Rush is fast
This is why the short rounds are a blessing: A match in Valorant lasts unusually long. Since a match requires a total of 13 wins to win, it can take 40 minutes or longer for a victor to be determined with evenly matched teams.
When two strong teams compete and the score is 13:12, it can be exciting, but since there are also one-sided rounds where one side is dominant from the start, players have to endure until they finally win. There is no option for early surrender.
In Spike Rush, however, it ends after a maximum of 7 rounds, and the average playtime is 10 minutes. In my opinion, this is more fun and provides more successful experiences with less frustration. If a match goes well, you achieve a cool win. If it goes poorly, at least it ends quickly.
3 – Spike Rush is good for practicing
Here’s why Spike Rush is also worthwhile for regular players: Since you get a random weapon in Spike Rush each round, you have to adapt your strategy. Those who generally only operate with the same 3 Valorant weapons in each round are forced to try out different weapons in combat.
In a regular round of Valorant, such experimentation can quickly backfire. If you realize that the chosen weapon is ineffective, you harm your team and potentially waste a victory.
Here, however, no one will flame you if you try out a completely new weapon because everyone starts with the same gun. This way, you are forced to deal with something other than your standard loadout, and who knows, maybe you’ll find a weapon that suits you surprisingly well and you’ll use it more often in regular rounds.
4 – Spike Rush is more relaxed
That’s why Spike Rush doesn’t take itself too seriously: Tactical shooters like Valorant are often serious affairs. You advance slowly, pay attention to every step, and are always on guard. Mistakes are rarely forgiven, and due to the lack of respawn, every error can potentially be your last.
This also applies in Spike Rush, but overall, the mode plays much more relaxed. This is mainly because every attacker has the Spike, allowing for wild, simultaneous attacks on multiple spike sites to lead to victory. Furthermore, it doesn’t happen here that a player with a Spike gets eliminated in the middle of nowhere, putting the entire team in trouble.
Especially cool are the power-ups. They provide, for example, support for the opponents or grant your side temporary advantages. This makes the rounds even more dynamic and rewards active, aggressive play.
Jürgen’s Conclusion – Why Valorant is even better for me now
This is why I like the new mode so much: The aforementioned advantages apply to me, Jürgen Horn from MeinMMO, particularly. As a father of a very active toddler, my gaming time is severely limited, and I can hardly complete a regular round of Valorant without having to go AFK at least once. This, of course, is unfair to my teammates and also isn’t fun, constantly losing for such reasons.

Therefore, Valorant, which I actually find very good, was almost dead to me. But the new mode Spike Rush saved Valorant for me. Because playing 10 minutes of Valorant quickly while the kid is sleeping or being entertained by my wife is always possible.
And as cool as the tactical gameplay in a regular round of Valorant is, I also enjoy the more relaxed fun that a quick round of Spike Rush offers. I hope that this mode stays in the game and that you have as much fun with it as I do.
