For 2022, Valheim has big plans with new features. The first update with content has already arrived – quite suddenly, as the developers themselves say. Actually, the patch is full of new things to discover, but the fans of the game are especially celebrating a new, actually self-evident feature that was previously missing.
This is what is currently happening in Valheim:
- At the beginning of February, Valheim turned 1 year old and still delights 50,000 players on Steam.
- For the birthday, the developers revealed big plans for 2022, including a new biome and a bunch of new content.
- On February 16, the first update was released on the Valheim test server, which added caves in the mountains among other things – and a small feature that has delighted fans.
What is this feature? It’s about a simple pause button. As seen in the official patch notes for the update, the first improvement listed is: “Pause feature in singleplayer.”
You can now simply pause Valheim when you are playing alone. This saves you food that would otherwise spoil and prevents you from being overwhelmed by NPCs while you are AFK.
However, you will now also have to explain to your parents or partners that online games can indeed be paused, at least sometimes.
On Reddit, the feature is being received very well. Simply going to the menu is enough to pause the game. Fans welcome the opportunity to now be able to step away from the PC without logging out safely. After all, it’s often the little things that excite the players of Valheim:
Update brings promised caves in the ice, new enemies and items
This is also included in the update: The big chunk of the PTR update consists of new caves in the mountains. In the cold biome, there are now several dungeons that you can explore, similar to the crypts in the swamp. There are also new enemies and items, such as:
- Cultists, bats, and “Ulvar”, which translates to wolves
- Jute, Fenring hair and claws as new materials including new components
- A Fenring armor set
- Flesh Rippers, a type of claw weapon
- A new event
Currently, the event is also a point of discussion. Some Vikings are complaining that they are constantly torn apart by wolves that sometimes simply appear endlessly.

What’s next? Once the caves have been implemented into the standard version of Valheim, the next update is already on the way. With the Mistlands, a new (and disgusting) biome is coming your way.
The developers are already working on the content of the new biome. There is currently no release date, but it shouldn’t take too long. We expect the caves to be available in spring 2022 and the Mistlands by the end of the summer.
