Swamps are one of the biomes of Valheim and represent the next step in your journey for many players after the Dark Forest. Here, you will encounter dangers for the first time that you have not faced before. MeinMMO explains what you can find in the swamp and provides survival tips.
What is the Swamp? Of the currently six biomes, the Swamp is the third one you will travel to – ignoring the ocean. You will find swamps always in coastal areas and often right next to a Dark Forest.
How do I reach a Swamp? If you can’t find a swamp on your island, you will first need to cross a lake or even the ocean. For this, you will need a ship, though we strongly advise against a raft. It’s better to build a Karve directly.
In swamps, you can find iron, which is the next highest material after copper, tin, and bronze. There are also additional materials for new cooking recipes, potions, and building components.
Once you locate a swamp, you should be careful not to underestimate it. This biome is much more dangerous compared to the Dark Forest.
Survival Tips for the Swamp Overview
- Stay away from puddles, as enemies often lurk there and you wade through very slowly.
- It continuously rains in the swamp – you are always wet and have reduced stamina regeneration. Stamina mead can help you. In our guide, you can read how to brew mead in Valheim.
- The power of Eikthyr also helps you combat the reduced stamina regeneration.
- Many enemies use poison attacks. Bring along some poison resistance mead; it can save your life.
- Enemies often appear in groups. Try to separate them using ranged combat and fight them one by one.
- Get at least troll hide armor and bronze weapons before heading out. Upgrade both to at least level 2 or 3. A fist or tower shield is also advisable.
- Never build directly in the swamp – there is usually grassland nearby where you can establish your outpost.
- If you want to save space, leave the axe in storage and only take a bronze pickaxe; the bark from trees is not needed for the moment.
- Atgeir and the Stagbreaker from Eikthyr will help you deal with groups of enemies and keep them at bay. The hammer is also strong against blobs and skeletons.
The Swamp in Detail – Enemies, Boss, Dungeons, and Loot
These enemies exist in the Swamp: The standard enemies in the swamp are the undead Draugr – undead Vikings who have left the realm of the living but are not allowed to travel to the realm of the dead. You will find them in the form of:
- Melee fighters with axes, some with shields
- Archers
- and elite warriors
They can be easily defeated with bronze weapons and a shield by parrying their attacks. Just be careful not to be overwhelmed by their numbers.
The second most common enemies are leeches (“Leeches”) and skeletons. You already know skeletons from the Dark Forest, and they are neither stronger nor smarter in the swamp. Leeches, on the other hand, hide in the water and can poison you. Therefore, avoid the puddles or watch for ripples in the water that indicate the movement of the leeches. It is quite hard to spot them through the mud.
Rarer encounters in the swamp include wraiths (“Wraiths”), blobs (“Blobs”), and oozer that split into blobs. Wraiths appear suddenly and can catch you by surprise – be careful, as they don’t withstand much in combat. Blobs are thick, living slime bags that attack you with poison and are resistant to pierce weapons. It’s best to attack them from a distance and use blunt weapons or frost arrows if you have them.
The boss in the swamp is Bone Mass, a giant pile of living, rotting corpses, considered one of the hardest bosses in the game. In our Valheim Boss Guide on MeinMMO, you can find out how to summon and defeat Bone Mass.
These dungeons exist in the Swamp: In swamps, you can find sunken crypts, which you can unlock with the swamp key. Inside, you will find iron as a new material as well as leather scraps, weathered bones (for the boss), bone fragments, and ancient bark, which you can otherwise gather from trees.
Additionally, the crypts are full of treasures and gold, which you can sell to the merchant Haldor to obtain rare goods from him. If you have trouble finding him, there is an easy trick to find the merchant in Valheim.
These new loots can be found in the swamp:
- Iron scraps in crypts – Tier-3 metal for stronger weapons, tools, and armor; also found in new components and the largest ship, the longship
- Innards of Draugr – Needed for making sausages at the cauldron
- Blood bags from leeches – Important ingredient for stronger healing mead and frost resistance mead
- Slime from blobs – Needed for poison arrows
- Ancient bark from trees or from crypts – Needed for new decorations and the longship
- Chains from wraiths – For the bellows to upgrade the forge
- Slime from trees (requires iron tool) – Green dye for banners and material for the later-tier-4 bow
- Turnip seeds from plants – New seeds to plant with your plow
- Trophies from the respective enemies
What comes after the Swamp?
If you conquer the swamp and have gathered enough iron, you can craft better armor and weapons with the new materials. Important: be sure to take blood sacks with you. You will need these for frost resistance mead, which is required for the next biome: the mountains.
In the mountains, it is so cold that you will freeze and take damage regularly unless you protect yourself with mead or special armor. However, you will only acquire the armor in the mountains themselves.
If you pay attention to our tips and follow the advice, you should not have any problems in the swamp. Once you have defeated Bone Mass, you can venture into the mountains and search for silver to further improve yourself. Remember to stock up on enough iron beforehand.
