A user reports that their Steam Machine has died after just 20 minutes. The culprit is likely the GPU on their motherboard.
What exactly happened? A user reports on Reddit that they successfully ordered a Steam Machine. However, they didn’t have much joy with the device, as they write in a comment: It had failed after just 20 minutes and would not start again. They themselves write in a post:
I played five minutes of “No Man’s Sky,” then I installed the available update, and the device crashed. If you are still in line for one, look at it positively: They will probably fix this mess.
In another post, they add that they are receiving no image on the monitor since the error occurred. The device is unresponsive, and an LED is glowing red.
On the official help page of Steam, the error of the Steam Machine can be checked. And it states: The system has detected a GPU failure
, which the user also confirms.
Soldered GPU is likely a case for support
What’s so frustrating about this? Aside from the fact that the Steam Machine was only officially released a few days ago, the user cannot fix the error themselves. The GPU is soldered directly to the motherboard of the Steam Machine.
Unlike a proper computer, you can’t simply remove and replace the graphics card/GPU. The user will thus have to reluctantly contact the official Steam/Valve support to solve their problem.
What happens next? The user explained that they intend to contact official Steam support to resolve the issue. We’ll keep you updated if there’s any news from the user regarding their Steam Machine.
A colleague has found her own way to avoid the high prices of the Steam Deck. Sophia Weiss is modding her Steam Deck to ensure it lasts a long time, so she won’t have to worry about the high prices.
