Ubisoft wants to promote fair play in Rainbow Six Siege and has integrated a system that detects players using mouse and keyboard on consoles – and punishes them for it.
- The fight against hardware cheaters has only just begun. Rainbow Six Siege was one of the first major multiplayer shooters that can recognize hardware cheaters.
- Ubisoft also takes action against disrespectful comments and ends cooperation with streamers.
- Three months ago, Ubisoft integrated the detection system “MouseTrap,” which can perceive the use of mouse and keyboard on consoles.
What is the problem with keyboard & mouse? The keyboard and mouse are connected to a console via an adapter. The consoles do not recognize that this is not a controller, allowing players to use aim assist.
Mouse, keyboard plus aim assist is a combination that can be considered unfair. Some even call it cheating.

Developers want to improve fair play in Rainbow Six Siege
How are the developers proceeding? Ubisoft wants to promote fair play in Rainbow Six Siege. Thus, they “punish” players who connect mouse and keyboard to their consoles, the so-called “spoofers,” with annoying lags.
On the Ubisoft website, they write:
MouseTrap is a new detection system that punishes the use of mouse and keyboard on consoles by adding extra [lags] for players who are detected and encourages them to use their controller again. Our goal is to restore true balance between competition and skill to improve fair play in Rainbow Six Siege.

Ubisoft does not want to directly ban the “spoofers,” but to give them a chance to “change their behavior and play fair.” Successfully.
What were the consequences? According to Ubisoft, this resulted in a reduction of the total number of mouse and keyboard users by 78%. In the ranked mode, it is at 73% (via Ubisoft.com). This exceeded their expectations.
A cheater can ruin the gaming experience for hundreds of players in a single match. Especially free-to-play titles often struggle with cheaters and hackers, but for one player, there was a last-minute rescue:
CoD Warzone 2 bans cheaters at just the right moment – “I never thought that would be possible!”
