Family entanglements are not only an important theme in mythology, Thor’s family in Marvel also has members you probably don’t know. An absurd story hides behind Thor’s secret sister.
Wasn’t Thor’s sister already in the 3rd movie? In Thor: Ragnarok, it is revealed that Thor has a sister named Hela, the Goddess of Death. In the comics, however, she is not Odin’s firstborn; she is actually just Loki’s daughter.
But in the comics, Thor also has an older sister, whom many probably know from Marvel Rivals: Angela.

Who is Angela in Marvel? Before diving into Angela’s lore, one should discuss her absurd comic history. She originally does not come from Marvel Comics, but from the Spawn universe, created by Todd MacFarlane. Spawn debuted in 1992, and MacFarlane reached out to notable figures in the comic business for further issues.
Among them was Neil Gaiman, the author of the Sandman comics. For Spawn No. 9 (1993), he took on the writing reins and created Angela – an angel and a hunter – together with MacFarlane. Although it was a cool collaboration, it resulted in a long legal battle between MacFarlane and Gaiman over the rights to Angela.
According to ScreenRant, Gaiman regained the rights to Angela in 2012 after a long time. However, he did not keep them. He sold them to Marvel, who first used the character in 2013 in the comic Age of Ultron No. 10. Marvel turned Angela into Aldrif Odinsdottir, Odin and Freyja’s first child. As a baby, she was kidnapped by the Queen of Angels to blackmail Odin in the Heaven’s war against Asgard.
This failed, and she allegedly killed the baby. Loriel, a servant of the Queen, was supposed to take care of the dead child, but when she saw that she was still alive, she raised her as an angel named Angela. This naturally led to conflicts with Asgard itself and her little brother Thor, and she doesn’t have to hide from him.
In Marvel Rivals, you can play as Angela yourself:
Angela could even defeat the Goddess of Death
How powerful is Angela? As a child of Asgard, she already has a pretty strong foundation. She is superhumanly strong and resilient, and ages significantly slower than normal humans. Additionally, she can easily heal very deep wounds, and she possesses the All-Speak, the ability to understand and speak any language.
Along with these given factors, her training as an angel adds to her abilities. She is skilled not only with her fists but can also handle swords, knives, and other weapons. Together with her armor, she is an incredibly powerful soldier.
In the comic series Angela: Queen of Hel (2015-2016), Angela wants to rescue her beloved Sera from Hel, the realm of the dead. There was also a fight between the two, which Angela won, making her the Queen of Hel – even though she shortly after abdicated to go to Brooklyn with her beloved.
This situation shows that she can hold her own against gods and can even defeat them.
What about Angela in the MCU? She is completely absent in the Marvel films so far. The role of Thor’s older sister was taken by Hela in the 3rd Thor movie. Therefore, it is questionable whether she will appear eventually. Although the 4th Thor film expanded the world of gods, it remains unclear how it will progress.
