In 2025, Superman celebrated a small renaissance thanks to the new movie. A year later, MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes recommends a true insider tip with the Man of Steel. This week, the series continues and shows the iconic character in a whole new way.
There are many series about superheroes, and sometimes they try to reimagine well-known characters with a new approach. This is also the idea behind My Adventures with Superman. The animated series premiered on July 6, 2023, on Adult Swim in the USA and only reached Germany on June 5, 2024, but only on Vodafone Giga TV (source: fernsehserien.de). Accordingly, the series is still somewhat unknown here.
Since May 1, 2026, the first two seasons have been available on HBO Max, and the upcoming third season is the perfect time to finally watch the series, as it is among the best superhero series you can currently enjoy.
Superman, but somehow as Anime
In My Adventures with Superman, the titular hero is still quite young. At 20 years old, he is still trying to balance his powers with his personal life, and then there’s his internship with his friend Jimmy Olsen at the Daily Planet. There, he meets the young journalist Lois Lane, whom he quickly falls in love with.
Instead of just focusing on his great heroic deeds, the series also gives a lot of space to various relationships and friendships. This suits the anime-inspired art style. Furthermore, the friendly, emotional approach reminded me of the Spider-Man films with Tom Holland. The series has a penchant for being cheesy, but thanks to the well-written characters, it remains likable, which never annoyed me.
The series creates a nice balance between lightness and the more serious themes of responsibility, the past, and love. This is especially refreshing for Superman, who has been in service for quite some time in films – fans of the DC series Smallville might definitely feel at home in My Adventures with Superman.
The mentioned lightness is also reflected in the animation. Adult Swim also produces Rick and Morty, and you can see this animation quality in My Adventures with Superman. Fight scenes are usually clear, but also powerful, which beautifully represents Clark Kent’s superpower. Here, too, you can see the anime inspiration – Who has not always wanted to see Clark Kent transform into Superman like a Magical Girl.
But the big highlight for me is the interpretation of the Superman mythos, which began in 1939.
The short intro gives you the perfect impression of the atmosphere of the series:
Even 88 Years After His Debut, Superman Can Still Surprise
Adapting a character like Superman in new variations after 88 years is difficult, but My Adventures with Superman shows how to do it well. The anime aesthetic fuses with the core idea behind Superman, thus generating the positive and hopeful feelings that I, as a DC fan, love about the character.
I clearly prefer this to darker adaptations like in the film Man of Steel. However, instead of just focusing on the Man of Steel, the other characters are also given a new twist. With Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, and Supergirl, new approaches are tried, but they never stray so far from the characters that they feel alien.
Yes, some moments are cheesy and fit more with teen series, but that fits perfectly with Superman. A light series fits perfectly in 2026, when you need a break from the heavy news, and that is exactly Superman’s task: to be a glimmer of hope in even the darkest situation.
For those who have come to love Superman mainly through the last film, I can only recommend My Adventures with Superman, because despite the unusual look, this is a Superman interpretation that I did not realize how much I actually needed.
Where can I watch My Adventures with Superman? You can find the first two seasons of the series in German on HBO Max. On June 14, 2026, the third season will also start there.
Currently, it is the perfect time to catch up on the series. Do you have any other superhero recommendations? Feel free to write them in the comments. Why Superman is still so good today, you can read here: Everyone knows Superman, and a new comic shows why that is still true 90 years later
