Bungie’s unwanted child is not dead and is expected to be supplied with content for a long time – including one thing that many fans have wanted for months.
What is this thing? The community of ARC Raiders has been requesting the introduction of PvE servers or a matchmaking option without PvP for months.
After the desire persisted for months, especially among PvE fans who were tired of being shot in the back, PvP fans have also increasingly hoped for such a mode to make PvP more attractive and to introduce corresponding leaderboards.
Yet, while the players of ARC Raiders are still desperately waiting for such a mode, it is Bungie that has now announced it will fulfill this desire in its extraction shooter, Marathon.
Bungie announces major changes for Marathon
Bungie has dedicated a detailed blog post (source: bungie.net) to the launch and future of Marathon. In it, the developers explain that they learned the game can quickly become overwhelming, that players can easily get stuck without much time, skill, or reliable teammates, and that sometimes you just don’t want to sweat.
Here’s what is changing: In Season 2, Marathon will test 2 new game modes:
- a mode that is more focused on PvE but has “a light touch” of PvP
- a PvE-only mode where crews must work together to achieve goals and make certain progress within matches
With the PvE-only mode, Bungie is bringing exactly the mode that the ARC Raiders community has wanted for months.
What else is coming: Besides the game modes that Bungie will test, there is expected to be a new map in Season 2 that focuses more on alien elements. New enemies from Tau Ceti “and beyond” will also be introduced, including both large and small ones. More details about Season 2 are expected to be released in the week of May 25.
This is what Bungie says about the future of the shooter: In the blog post, Bungie announced it will continue to experiment with various modes in the future. A mode focusing more on PvP could also be tested.
In Season 3, a new runner shell is also expected to be added, while Season 4 aims to bring more depth to the existing extraction loop. Season 5 is then expected to bring the entire PvEvP ecosystem together and further develop the game’s SciFi world. Bungie does not elaborate on its plans for Season 4.
Overall, the blog post indicates that Bungie and Sony plan to support Marathon with more content at least until Season 5. A season lasts 3 months. Players can look forward to receiving new content for at least another year. This was uncertain for many fans after the release month: How is Bungie’s 200-million shooter doing one month after release? Does Marathon still have a chance to recoup its high costs?
