The true hero in The Lord of the Rings was not exactly well compensated, even had to sell his house

The trilogy of The Lord of the Rings is one of the most well-known film series of all time. But not all actors received a good fee, even though they had an important role.

Which actor is it about? Even though there are many strong warriors in Middle-earth, it is clear even to Tolkien that Samwise Gamgee is a highly heroic figure. Without his courage, Frodo may never have made it to Mount Doom.

There was a discrepancy between attention and money

How much did Sean Astin get for the role of Samwise? In an interview with The Guardian, Sean Astin recently spoke about many topics of his career, including The Lord of the Rings. The trilogy was a major attention magnet for him. He himself says that he was not prepared for this level of public exposure and attention.

Moreover, according to him, there was a discrepancy between the attention and the money he received. He recounts in the interview: It was not much money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a low amount for the trilogy. Today, he is in a very good financial position.

In this interview, he does not specify the fee, but in 2017, Astin spoke more concretely about it on the Jim and Sam Show (source: YouTube). He bought a house and, according to his business manager, based on his new mortgage and other costs, he should earn about 250,000 US dollars a year.

For the role in The Lord of the Rings, however, he only received a fee of 250,000 US dollars over a period of 1.5 years. According to the statement in the interview, he received about 75,000 US dollars per film (which does not quite add up to 250,000, but he probably rounds down). Much worse, however, was that he reportedly did not receive any royalties based on the success. With such a major success as The Lord of the Rings, that would have made the comparatively small fee balanced out.

Although he is a popular character in The Lord of the Rings, he never became a mega-star. His most notable roles outside of Middle-earth are probably in The Goonies or Stranger Things. Besides that, he is also an advocate for the rights of actors. In 2025, he became the chairperson of SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union in the USA.
