The Definitive Edition of Stronghold Crusader was released on Steam just a few weeks ago, and there is already news about the first major update. This includes new missions and additional characters.
What is this update about? The remaster of the strategy classic Stronghold Crusader was released on July 15, 2025, and garnered significant interest with excellent reviews.
Now the developers at Firefly Studios have announced information about the first major update on YouTube. This is set to be released in autumn 2025 and will consist of two parts. The first is a free update, while the second is a paid DLC.
Both will bring new content to the game, including three new enemies that you will face in additional missions.

What does the free update offer in detail? Let’s first take a look at the part that is free for all players. The update includes a new character, the “Crocodile.” This rascal is said to be quite deranged by the developers and ruthlessly exploits your weaknesses in a match. Like the other newcomers, this character also comes with its own tactics, castle designs, and armies.
The Crocodile is expected to be featured in the new economic campaign. In five fresh missions, the primary goal is to master the various economic aspects of Stronghold Crusader. Battles take more of a backseat.
A new map pack also brings three new locations.
What does the paid DLC offer? If you pay the yet unnamed price for the expansion, you will receive two additional characters, the “Merchant” and the “Canary.” They are part of nine additional missions for the “Desert of Time” mode. They are meant to test your skills and provide a tough challenge.
When exactly the major update will be released and how much the DLC will cost is not yet known. Since the developers refer to the “autumn update,” it is assumed that it will be released during that time frame.
