Level 2: Essentials for One-Day Events & Taverns

Once you have your basics together, that is your outfit and the essentials for logistics, you can start thinking about the equipment for your first one-day event or your first LARP tavern.

The following points are recommendations from me and my LARP group. Much of this depends on the weather and season. However, I certainly do not want to withhold it from you.

Here as well, we have provided you with a few thoughts under each point; just open them.

Hygiene & Body Care

A whole day in play and under pressure, possibly even exposed to the elements. You don’t need a complete shower setup yet, but a few hygiene and body care basics wouldn’t hurt.

Disinfectant

Depending on your event’s location, the toilet situation can be complex. There may only be cold water for washing hands, or only very public toilets may be available. Soap might not even be present. My personal highlight is mobile toilets emptied once a day.

For your comfort, I recommend packing hand disinfectant. Anyone wanting to go a step further should also consider surface disinfectant or disinfectant wipes.

Wet Wipes

With wet wipes, you can manage a quick wash on hot days. If you’ve opted for war paint or make-up, make-up remover wipes are recommended.

Tissues

Whether it’s cold season, allergies kick in, or you just need something to wipe your hands – having one or two packs of tissues won’t take up much space and are always helpful.

Lip Balm

Especially in high summer, when the sun is blazing, it can be worth having a lip balm with SPF on hand. In winter, it can protect against the cold. By the way: sunny days in winter with a closed snow cover can cause similar sunburns as hot summer days.

Sun Cream

As soon as the sun comes out, you should arm yourself with sun cream. I personally prefer to use the SPF 50+ right away because I forget to reapply and I’m also a rather fair-skinned person. Choose your sun protection factor as needed.

However: Keep the sun cream handy. A severe sunburn after LARP is no fun.

Anti-tick or Mosquito Spray

If you’re out and about during tick and mosquito season, I can highly recommend an appropriate insect repellent spray. Sure, you don’t smell like roses. But it’s better to smell a little stronger than to come home with 5,000 bites or Lyme disease.

Health & Comfort

Self-heating Insoles

An absolute game-changer on cold days are self-heating insoles. They keep your feet warm even at minus five degrees. At least for a short time.

This is important because wet, cold feet are one of the biggest fun killers when it comes to LARP, right behind inconsiderate players and rule lawyers.

Blister Plasters

Having a few blister plasters at hand is always a good idea. You’re on your feet all day in the same pair of shoes. Sometimes even through woods and over meadows, up and down mountains. Even in the best shoes, your feet can get sore.

Day Medications

Pack all medications you usually need to take – if you have any. Take them as well, and if time management becomes difficult due to too much fun, set a mobile alarm.

But it’s also worth packing medications for contingencies. For example, something against diarrhea, electrolytes, an antihistamine, as well as plasters and disinfectant.

Tech & Gadgets

Power Bank & Mobile Charging Cable

Depending on how long your day LARP goes and how you are traveling, a power bank and the corresponding charging cables for your electronics are almost always worth it. Especially, you should be able to charge your phone.

Cup

In the basics, water containers or disguised bottles are already included, and cups are suggested. It’s definitely worth having your own mug. Possible materials include ceramic, metal, or wood.

Choose one with a size you like and keep in mind that the cup also says something about the character.

Flashlights

In an emergency at night, it’s always better that someone has a flashlight. It doesn’t have to be heavy or large. But if you can fit a little lamp in your bag, you will always have light available.

On page 1, you will find the basics needed for any LARP event. On the next page, you’ll find everything needed for multi-day grand cons.
