Since the latest update of Apex Legends, the localization in German is now fully completed. All voice lines are now available in German. MyMMO author Benedict finds them good, but some are also amusing to questionable.
Since when is the game available in German? Apex Legends has had a German text output since its release in February. Only the various legends were still speaking English, with German subtitles as needed.
Since the new patch from June 4th, which also brought the time-limited hunting event, all legends and the announcer have been voiced in German. For me, as someone who likes some variation, it’s a pretty cool thing.
We have embedded gameplay from YouTuber Nensch below, with which you can get a small picture of the new voice output.
This is how funny German sounds in Apex Legends
How good are the announcers? First of all, I want to say that the German announcers in Apex Legends have done a really good job. In other games that are localized afterwards, the voice lines often sound stiff and simply read out loud.
In Apex Legends, the announcers sound as if they are really having a conversation. A bit of slang even mixes into the conversations. Instead of a stiff “Forget that” after canceling a ping, Wraith for example says something mumbled: “Forget it”.
Other legends and their voices also sound convincing, especially in my view, Mirage. He sounds quite convinced of himself in German too and the voice simply fits the character well.
However, some terms have apparently been replaced randomly, while others have been left in English. This was partly the case already at the release in written German, but I don’t quite understand the selection and it also sounds awkward:
- The Kill Leader is called Kill-Leader
- Care Packages are called Care-Paket, but the containers in the world are called supply containers
- The Jumpmaster is still called Jumpmaster and not Jumpmaster
Even some iconic phrases sound somewhat stiff or poorly translated, like Caustic’s: “This battle will end with a defeat of the weak, that’s how it will be.” However, these are more the exceptions than the rule. Many of the terms are probably just still unfamiliar to the ears.
This is what I miss: Although the announcers do a good job, I missed the personality of the characters in some places.
Especially Lifeline, Gibraltar, Bloodhound, and Octane sounded iconic in English because of their strong accents.
In German, however, they all speak pure High German, with the exception of the newest legend Octane. He is the only one who retained his Latino accent. All others sound “normal”.
Would you rather play again in English?
If you want to listen to Apex Legends in English again, despite the actually quite good quality of the German voice output, you can simply change the language. However, this has to be done in the game options outside of the game.
This is how you change the language: For PC, simply open Origin and select “Game Properties” under the “Play” button of the game. Here you can change the language under “Advanced Launch Options”.
On Xbox One, both the language and the region must be set to English and an English-speaking country in the system settings of the console. Afterwards, the console should be restarted.
For PS4, the same procedure as for Xbox One should work. Afterwards, you definitely need to download the new language packs, which can be several gigabytes of data.
What do you think of the new announcers?
In addition to the German text lines, new animations have also been added:
