The Division 2 will also appeal to single players. We provide an overview of what you can play solo.
Who is The Division 2 aimed at? Officially, The Division 2 is a shooter RPG with co-op and PvP content, primarily targeting multiplayer fans. With a completely new, complex clan system, it includes social features to emphasize the multiplayer aspect.
What the developers say about single player: Both publisher Ubisoft and developer Massive have emphasized repeatedly in recent weeks and months that The Division 2 also caters to solo players.
“Play solo or form a task force,” Ubisoft recently wrote about the open beta release. And regarding the latest information on the server start, it states: “The Division 2 is a seamless online experience that gives you the freedom to play alone or cooperatively with up to four players.”
Massive’s Associate Creative Director, Chadi El-Zibaoui, also assured, that The Division 2 can be played solo. As a solo player, you will already experience a lot in the campaign. And from day one, content will be delivered for everyone – not just for groups, but also for solo players.
According to the developers, The Division 2 is worth it for single players already. But what can you actually play solo?
The campaign is just the beginning for solo players
This content is available to solo players: All content that you can play solo can also be tackled in a task force with up to three other friends. However, you will probably have to take the first steps in the campaign alone until you unlock the co-op features.
- Campaign: In several main missions, you fight as a Division agent against hostile factions to ensure law and order in Washington D.C. and to protect the civilian population. According to Ubisoft, the campaign is said to last over 40 hours. It also includes narrative depth, many secrets, and a lot to discover. You can find out more about the story in The Division 2 here.
- Side missions: In addition to the main missions, you can also take on side missions that tell additional stories and drop loot. Main missions and side missions can be repeated in the endgame.
- Open-world activities: Not only within missions, but also in the open world, fights await you. You will encounter hostile factions patrolling the streets, occupying control points, or attempting to execute someone. Additionally, collectible objects can be found in the open world that reveal more about the lore.
- Projects: NPCs in settlements and safehouses will periodically have tasks for you in the form of projects. In the endgame, there are weekly and daily projects where you might need to clear zones of enemies or complete missions on high difficulty levels. For this, you will receive rewards.
- Hunts: Hunts are an evolution of the high-profile targets from The Division 1. The objective is to eliminate a sought-after enemy for whom a “bounty” has been placed. The bosses come with special abilities to surprise you. In addition to “handcrafted” hunts, there are also procedurally generated hunts, ensuring that they always offer a new player experience.
- Priority Target Network: This is a progress tree consisting of weekly hunts that continue the story around D.C. Complete hunts to advance in the progress tree and unlock a heroic hunt where the best rewards await. Whether these hunts can be completed solo remains to be seen.
- Dark Zone and PvP: Even as a solo player, you can venture into PvP. There is matchmaking. In the Dark Zone, the PvEvP area, you can also hunt loot and other players as a lone wolf. However, the chances of good loot and survival are higher in a well-coordinated task force.
- Invaded missions and strongholds: Invaded missions are endgame missions. A new, particularly strong faction, the Black Tusk, occupies certain main missions from the campaign that you need to drive out. Strongholds, on the other hand, are fortresses of the factions that you can clear. They represent “particularly large and nasty” missions, most of which you will already encounter during the campaign. In the endgame, the strongholds will be taken over by the Black Tusk. How difficult these endgame missions will be for solo players remains to be seen.
The further you progress in the endgame, the higher the difficulty levels you will unlock. How far a “normal” single player can go remains to be seen. We have summarized all information about the endgame, strongholds, and world ranks for you.
Here’s how it was in The Division 1: In The Division 1, you could also tackle endgame activities solo. However, only a few agents managed to complete the tough incursions or the most challenging missions on their own. It is likely that the endgame in The Division 2 will also be a tough challenge for solo play.

What must single players forgo?
This content can only be played with others:
- Raids: In The Division 2, there will be 8-player raids, with the first starting shortly after release. According to Massive, this is to be tackled in a group.
- Clan features: If you don’t want to team up with other players and instead roam Washington D.C. as lone wolves, you will miss out on several clan-exclusive features. This includes clan projects, clan hunts, and a clan social space.
Is an internet connection necessary for solo players? Even though The Division 2 offers a lot for single players, it is still an online shooter. You need a constant internet connection to connect to the game servers. If the servers are offline, you cannot play.
Is The Division 2 worth it as a single player? As a single player, you get an extensive campaign, many open-world activities, and plenty of things to discover in The Division 2. Whether the endgame will be frustrating or fun for solo players due to its difficulty remains to be seen. Nevertheless – solo players have plenty to do.
After release, there will also be free expansions in which single players will likely enjoy new main missions and additional content:
