For a possible film adaptation of Elden Ring, cryptic statements from those in charge have been circulating for months. Now there is a new hint from the author himself – however, it comes with the note that he won’t be very involved. There is a good reason for this.
What is the film about?
- Since 2024, there have been rumors about a film based on Elden Ring, at least since George R. R. Martin suspiciously ruled out an adaptation.
- The director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has stated that he would indeed be interested in a film adaptation. However, the right partner needs to be found.
- In an interview with IGN, idea contributor George R. R. Martin speaks again about the film and how much he will be involved in it.
This is what George R. R. Martin says now: “I can’t say too much, but there are discussions about adapting Elden Ring into a film,” the author reveals to the magazine. While this is still not a confirmation, it is at least somewhat more concrete than before.
Martin becomes a bit more specific when it comes to how much he can contribute. Namely: not much. Martin states in the interview: “We’ll see if [the Elden Ring film] gets made, and I don’t know yet how involved I will be in it.”
The author explains that he is “a few years” behind schedule with his latest book Winds of Winter. The latest part of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” or “Game of Thrones” saga has been in the works since 2011.
Originally, Martin planned to finish his epic by the release of Game of Thrones. That didn’t quite work out, and Martin himself admits he doesn’t know how such a delay could happen. The book now takes priority.
Elden Ring continues, but (not yet) as a film
After its release, Elden Ring received its first DLC Shadow of the Erdtree in 2024, featuring new bosses, new areas, and an expanded storyline.
Currently, the spin-off Nightreign is in development. Here, you collect loot on a map and survive through day-night cycles to defeat multiple bosses in a row. The gameplay is round-based and designed for co-op. Nightreign is set to be released on May 20, 2025.
FromSoftware is working on several new titles, including of course Nightreign – however, not on an Elden Ring 2. There are no concrete statements on anything beyond game development, so nothing regarding films or series.
