In Elden Ring: Nightreign, fans will soon have to fight against brutal bosses in a trio team to stop the darkness, but is it absolutely necessary to play in a team to have fun? The head of the game clarifies.
How is Elden Ring Nightreign played? As demonstrated in the network test, the core of Nightreign is as follows: You join a team with 2 teammates, must survive 2 nights, and loot everything you can find and use to then face the Night Lord on the third night.
In February 2025, the head of Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, reported that you can also start your rounds solo without the help of two friends. The rounds would be very challenging, but not impossible. In a new interview, the game director went into more detail about the multiplayer aspect and whether there might even be an option for duo teams.
Designed for trios and solos, duos were overlooked
What does the head of Nightreign say? In an interview with IGN, Junya Ishizaki shares more details about the multiplayer of the game. According to him, the game was mainly designed for a trio group or solo players – duos were not initially considered, largely due to balancing.
The game director explains that the game must adapt depending on the chosen group composition in order to not overwhelm the players. This is especially true for solo players: “The behavior and aggression of enemies towards a single player has been adjusted so that there are no inappropriate fights with multiple opponents. And in general, the parameters in single-player mode dynamically adjust to the number of players in this session.”
And although a duo mode will not be released initially, the head of Nightreign makes it clear that such a feature might still appear in the future: “We are trying to create an enjoyable experience with three people. So we want to ensure that the experience is fun at its core with a trio group, but does not break down with a solo player… in all our efforts regarding this aspect, we have somehow overlooked and neglected the duo aspect, but that is something we will look into and consider for post-launch support.”
So if you only have one friend who wants to hunt tough bosses with you, you will also need to pull in a random player, otherwise, the matchmaking will not work initially. Other than that, though, coop is definitely much more fun, especially when you have chosen the right classes. There are supposed to be 8 altogether for now, do you know them already?
