Stellaris lets you rule an empire in space. However, this dream can quickly turn into a nightmare with the new expansion Cosmic Storms – and not in a good way, as many players report on Steam.
What kind of game are we talking about? Stellaris is a 4X strategy game set in a sci-fi universe. In it, you can explore and conquer a constantly changing universe. The game was developed by Paradox and is ranked in the top 10 of the most popular global strategy games on Steam.
Cosmic Storms is the latest DLC for Stellaris, released on September 10, 2024. This was developed in collaboration with Behaviour, the studio behind the successful multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight.

What’s new in Cosmic Storms? The DLC adds eight new cosmic storms to the game, ranging from thunderstorms with lightning to the massive Nexus Storm, a galactic weather phenomenon of unprecedented size. These storms can mean the end of your civilization or can be used to your advantage.
With the “Stormhunter,” there is a new origin centered around the storms. You can choose to explore these unusual weather phenomena and uncover their secrets or worship them and possibly gain benefits from them.
Fans have mixed feelings
Is the DLC worth it? Fans of the game are not very enthusiastic about Cosmic Storms yet. On Steam, the expansion is rated as “Mixed,” with only 63% of user reviews being positive. However, since this is a very large strategy game and the DLC was only recently released, things could change significantly.
Several players are upset about the early occurrence of the storms. For example, ElFicco420 writes on Steam: “I had a Nexus Storm spawn in year 10 that destroyed all my worlds over the next ten years. […] Paying 12 euros to let RNG decide if you can play the game is crazy.”
Other players do not mind the new content but are put off by the price. Harlock explains his thumbs down on Steam as follows: “It’s not bad, it’s fun, and adds nice environmental hazards, but it’s expensive for what it is.”
Dominic, as a long-time player, is thrilled with the DLC. His conclusion on Steam: “If you are a fan of Stellaris, the Cosmic Storms DLC is definitely worth your money. It adds depth, challenge, and beauty to an already amazing game. Highly recommended!”
