In the multiverse of Dungeons & Dragons, not all opponents you encounter are obviously threatening. MyMMO showcases some particularly quirky specimens that will keep you entertained for a long time.
How was the list created? For our list, we have selected 10 opponents that are uniquely absurd or strange in their own way, whether through their design or their abilities – or both. Many of them you will probably underestimate when you first encounter them. To prepare you and keep you from being misled, we have compiled this overview for you.
We have also paid attention to a diverse lineup, so that every player and game master can find something. We have limited ourselves to the 5th edition taking into account the new rulebooks (version 2024).
Gelatinous Cube

- Type: Large Ooze
- Alignment: Unaligned
- Found in: Basic Rules (2014), Monster Manual (2024), Waterdeep: Dungeon Of The Mad Mage
What initially looks like a giant block of jelly is at least as dangerous as it seems unremarkable. Its threat is only underscored by various creatures and objects in its transparent interior, all of which are dissolved by its acidic nature once it strikes. They are mostly found in the Underdark.
Gelatinous cubes are very large and can either swallow one large or up to four medium or small creatures. Once inside the cube, you cannot breathe and will be dissolved by the acid round after round. To escape, you must make a Strength saving throw of 12. It’s especially annoying when they block a path that you must or want to take.
It is also transparent and blends into the environment. Even when the cube is clearly visible, a creature must succeed on a Wisdom check (Perception) against 15 to notice the cube, unless it has witnessed the cube moving or reacting to the environment in some way.
