The developer Unknown Worlds has released a new gameplay trailer for Subnautica 2. It briefly introduces you to the new alien planet Alterra and you will learn more about some of the dangers awaiting you in your new home. Especially a forbidden place piques the fans’ interest.
What does the trailer show? In the gameplay trailer on Youtube for Subnautica 2, which will be released on May 14, 2026, on Steam, the developers show you the new underwater world with its biomes, various tools, the construction of a base, and of course some background to the story.
The presentation is garnished with an explicit warning that players will naturally want to ignore as soon as they can dive into Subnautica 2. A voice reveals that there is a place – or rather a tree – that the protagonist shouldn’t visit. Just like the motto: I shouldn’t press the red button … can’t … resist …

Watch out for biological mods
What’s the deal with the tree? The trailer unfortunately only shows an image of the tree. However, just before that, a glowing plant is shown that eventually also finds a place in the player’s base and resembles the structure.
The voice of the trailer talks about so-called biomods that are supposedly safe, but the player should be wary of voices in their head and the urge to swim to the tree.
Players have already found their first objective: The Youtube user mursuinfo6691 has written the top comment with over 11,000 likes: “We’re definitely going to that tree.” (As of: May 10, 2026, at 8:40 AM)
Many other users also ignore the warning in the trailer and would prefer to dive directly to the mysterious tree. What it’s all about will likely only be revealed upon release on May 14.
What are the reactions to the trailer? The trailer has now achieved over 1 million views and the comments are filled with positive voices looking forward to the release.
