The disgraced Twitch streamer Herschel “Guy” Beahm alias “DrDisrespect” wanted to revolutionize the genre with the shooter Deadrop. In 2024, the studio fired him after his scandal. Now, Midnight Society announces its closure. The game will not be released.
What kind of studio is this? Midnight Society was founded in 2021 by former CoD and Halo developers and the shooter streamer DrDisrespect. With the vertical extraction shooter Deadrop, they aimed to usher in a “new era of competitive multiplayer” .
However, after the true circumstances surrounding DrDisrespect’s notorious Twitch ban became known in 2024, the studio parted ways with the famous figurehead. Shortly thereafter, Midnight Society announced the “difficult decision to streamline [their] operations.”
About half of the staff has been let go, according to an insider. However, the studio insisted on wanting to release the shooter in 2025. Now it’s clear that this will not happen.
Users demand refunds
This is what the studio says now: In a post on X late in the evening on January 30, 2025, it was announced that Midnight Society would close “after three incredible years.” They are actively looking for other gaming studios that might be interested in hiring the talented team members, it further states.
“We want to express our sincere gratitude to each and every one of our community members and deeply regret that we could not achieve our ultimate goal.” (via X)
This goal was likely the release of Deadrop, as ultimately, the studio did not release a single game in its more than three-year history. However, they had already sold NFTs. A total of 10,000 access passes were to be sold for around 50 US dollars each to Founders
.
The passes included early access and voting rights on game features, as well as a time-limited NFT collectible.
In the comments on X, it is therefore not surprising that there are increasing questions about refunds for the “Founders.” However, it is rather unlikely that the early adopters will see their money again.
What about DrDisrespect? The former figurehead of the studio seems to have regained his footing in the meantime.
