In Starfield, you have a wide selection of companions that you can take with you on your journey. What companions are, how many are available, and how to obtain them will be explained in our overview.
What are companions? As the name suggests, companions are computer-controlled characters in Starfield that can accompany you on your travels.
Primarily, they help you in combat and provide additional firepower. They can also assist with your carrying capacity by taking items off your hands and storing them.
How many companions are there? Bethesda itself talked in an interview about the multitude of companions available in Starfield. It was mentioned that there are over 20 named characters who can follow you, assist in combat, and carry your load.

Vasco
Where can I find this companion? Vasco is a robot that you will automatically meet in the first mission “A Small Step”.
Sarah Morgan
Where can I find this companion? You can meet Sarah at the end of your first mission “A Small Step”. She is the head of the Constellation and will welcome you.
Sam Coe
Where can I find this companion? Sam can be found relatively early in the main story during the mission “The Empty Nest”.
Andreja
Where can I find this companion? You can find Andreja during the quest “Into the Unknown” when Vladimir sends you to check on her.
Barrett
Where can I find this companion? You can only recruit Barrett starting from the mission “Return to Vectera”.
