The new NPC “Mateo” in Pokémon GO is expected to meet Trainers at the end of routes. However, Trainers report difficulties in encountering him. Now, some are trying tricks.
Who is Mateo? This is the new NPC in Pokémon GO with whom you can exchange gifts. He is an important part of the new event “Along the Routes”, where you can complete a special research with him.

Here’s the problem: Mateo can be found on routes in Pokémon GO, but only once a day and not guaranteed. This means: It’s possible to walk a route and simply not encounter the researcher.
This is inconvenient when you want to complete the special research with him. However, there was a similar problem before with the Zygarde cells, which did not reliably appear on the routes for all Trainers when they were searching for them.
And just like with the coveted cells, Trainers are now looking for tricks to encounter Mateo.

What tricks are Trainers testing to meet Mateo in Pokémon GO?
Currently, some Trainers are desperately searching for Mateo, as he simply does not appear for them. Thus, several Trainers in the Pokémon GO Reddit community report numerous route attempts without the researcher making an appearance.
In doing so, one should definitely keep in mind:
- Mateo appears only once a day, so you don’t need to search for him multiple times a day
- He is supposed to appear at the end of a route, so you need to walk it completely
- And: Some Trainers report that he disappears after the route has been completed, even though he has already spawned. So be careful not to overlook him.
What tricks are Trainers testing? Currently, a trick is going around that Trainers also used with the Zygarde cells: A restart before the end of the route.
Trainer “Disgruntled Goat” shared in the subreddit “TheSilphRoad” that you should restart the game shortly before the end of a route if you don’t see him: “That just worked for me,” writes the Trainer (via reddit): “I reached the end of a route, no Mateo (or Zygarde cell). But after a restart, he appeared.” For him, it worked on a “loop route”, meaning a route with the same start and endpoint.
The Trainer has tried this once so far, and it worked immediately, so it is still unclear how reliable this is. In the comments and further posts in the community, players report both that it works for them, but also that it doesn’t work for others. We’ll have to wait and see how this trick develops.
Another variant was shared by Trainers in the comments as well: They refer to tapping on the arena at the end of the route, after which Mateo appeared. This is also something to try when you are nearing the end of the route. However, there are also voices here saying that it did not work for them.
What do I need Mateo for? Basically, Mateo can exchange gifts with you. The most interesting thing about this is that you can receive postcards from Trainers in completely different regions, as Mateo has them like a postman. This can help if you want to complete your Vivillon patterns.
Otherwise, you need him to complete the current special research that requires you to exchange actions with Mateo.
