Pokémon GO has introduced the proto forms of Kyogre and Groudon in more detail. Now it is known how they work, what bonuses they bring, and that they will become incredibly strong.
What are proto forms? The proto forms of Kyogre and Groudon are an improved version of the two legendary monsters, which are created through “protomorphosis”. This resembles the function of mega evolutions in Pokémon GO.
When will the form be in the game? Proto-Kyogre and Proto-Groudon will first appear in proto raids for participants of the Hoenn Tour in Las Vegas.
For all other trainers, the global Hoenn Tour at the end of February is the crucial date to encounter Proto-Kyogre and Proto-Groudon and to be able to perform the protomorphosis.
How does protomorphosis work? Similar to mega energies, “proto energy” is needed for Kyogre and Groudon. This can be obtained from the new “proto raids” that will appear during the Hoenn Tour, as well as from certain research tasks.
The proto form lasts for eight hours. The energy costs for protomorphosis decrease the more often the Pokémon performs it.
How strong will Proto-Kyogre and Proto-Groudon be in Pokémon GO
How strong will the proto forms be: If you catch Kyogre or Groudon in proto raids, they will each receive a special attack.
- Kyogre can learn “Origin Wave” (130 damage in trainer, arena, and raid battles)
- Groudon learns “Primal Rend” (130 damage in trainer, arena, and raid battles)
After a preliminary analysis of the upcoming proto forms (via reddit by user Teban54), the two proto forms rank at the top of the attacker list of their respective types with these attacks.
Proto-Kyogre will be the strongest water attacker with the special attack, while Proto-Groudon becomes the best ground attacker. The normal forms of both monsters also benefit from the new attack.
But it’s not just their own strength that makes the two monsters extremely useful.
These bonuses do the proto forms have in Pokémon GO
Both monsters bring special bonuses when they use their proto form.
Proto-Kyogre enhances all water, electric, and bug attacks in raid battles. So when you raid together, several types benefit from an attack bonus. Additionally, Proto-Kyogre gives you extra candies and XP if it is your buddy and you catch Pokémon of these three types.
With Proto-Groudon, it’s similar. It brings attack bonuses for attacks of the types fire, grass, and ground. Moreover, there are also extra candies and XP when catching these three types if Proto-Groudon is your buddy.
Furthermore, the proto level of both monsters increases the more often you perform the protomorphosis. Then the bonuses will improve.
As the Hoenn Tour approaches, other events are still upcoming. Currently, the Lunar New Year event is starting in Pokémon GO.
