In Pokémon GO the worldwide Hoenn Tour starts tomorrow. But before that, one should urgently complete a special research task.
This is the special research: It is about the special research “Proto-Grollen”, which has been available in Pokémon GO since February 17. It consists of two task stages.
The special research is not too long and does not expire, but should be completed urgently now.
Why should I complete the research now? The special research rewards you with a ticket for the worldwide Hoenn Tour, which starts on Saturday.
This “activates automatically and grants you access to special bonuses and content from the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn,” it says in the item description. The ticket allows you to choose a team for the GO Tour – Ruby or Sapphire.
Also, the official support channel of Niantic warns on Twitter: “Trainers, we recommend completing the Proto-Grollen special research before the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn – Global to experience the full event gameplay with the special research ‘Legendenjagd'” (via Twitter).
What kind of special research is this? So far, it is only known that the research involves Rhi from the Ultra Research Team – and the search for the Red and Blue gems. These are related to the Protomorphosis and the powerful new forms of Kyogre and Groudon.
What bonuses you miss out on without completing “Proto-Grollen” is only partially known. What is certain is that you would have no team – and therefore, for example, would not be able to complete special research for any of the teams. During the GO Tour, among other things, the “Challenge: Ruby vs Sapphire” is running, for which you need a team.
In addition, Latias (Sapphire) and Latios (Ruby) are also said to appear in the wild and be linked to the respective medal you receive during the team selection. It is possible that you might miss these spawns without a team.

What do you have to do in the special research Proto-Grollen?
The research itself is not too difficult and can be completed quickly.
For stage 1, you need to:
- Catch 5 Pokémon of the Water, Electric or Bug type
- Catch 5 Pokémon of the Fire, Plant or Ground type
- Catch 10 Pokémon from the Hoenn region
For stage 2, you need to:
- Complete 5 field research tasks
- Perform 10 power-ups on Pokémon
- Land 5 great curveballs
You should note: The team selection will be given to you at the end when you have completed all stages. For some players, this is not displayed immediately. Click on the research symbol again or restart the game if necessary – then you should receive the selection.
