When it comes to winning, MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes likes to use cowardly or devious tactics in the games of Pokémon. His fiancée felt this during their first date.
More than a month ago, I confessed how I ruined my sister’s first Pokémon experience. Apparently, there is a devious streak in me when it comes to the monster series. Even when playing, I always try to win.
In doing so, I also resort to sneaky strategies
– after all, I want to be the very best. My fiancée also experienced this during our first date.
An Annoying Attack and a Lot of Luck
How did the battle go on the first date? Since we had already talked about Pokémon (and the best Korean movies), we decided to play some Pokémon against each other on our first date. We decided to use Sun and Moon on the 3DS.
While she put thought into her moveset beforehand, I took it a bit more relaxed and just chose the Pokémon I had on hand. I particularly remember the last starter evolution Primarina.
The battle began and she used Stealth Rocks – on a date. I took it personally and even though I actually had the worse cards, I just had to win. So I resorted to the tactics of a coward and the annoying move: Sing from Primarina.
The move is quite simple; it puts the opposing Pokémon to sleep. So my tactic was pretty straightforward: her Pokémon fell asleep and I attacked. But I needed a lot of luck because Sing only has an accuracy of 55%.
Moreover, the sleep factor only lasts 1 to 3 turns since the 5th generation. So I usually had to endure a hit because Primarina’s speed stat is not particularly high (base stat only 60). On the other hand, Primarina has a good special defense and special attack, which helped me a lot. It was also lucky that my date didn’t have any Pokémon that were effective against Primarina (Water/Fairy).
Somehow, I managed to win this duel with my cowardly tactics. Of course, I didn’t just take the victory silently – just imagine the victory dance of Crash Bandicoot at this point. Although I was quite a fool back then, we will soon get married. So the duel didn’t harm me, except that my fiancée still accuses me of the singing
to this day – but what wouldn’t you do for a victory.
The duel in Sun and Moon was just the beginning of a competitive streak in my relationship. In games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Street Fighter, we also enjoyed virtually fighting against each other, and I don’t even want to start mentioning board games, because in those we both often forget that we are actually together. MeinMMO editor Karsten even met his wife thanks to an MMO: “My wife won me in a giveaway for Guild Wars 2” – as a consolation prize, so to speak
