Do you know the phenomenon where you can no longer enjoy a game because it’s not like your favorite game? A player describes which MMORPG has forever left a gap in his heart.
What kind of phenomenon does the player describe? In the Reddit forum, a user writes that a game ruined all future video games for him. He played an MMORPG as a teenager for several months and was completely immersed in the game.
- The game was anything but beginner-friendly. You had to figure everything out for yourself or ask other players.
- The game also took you in with its guild system. The player had a role to fulfill and farmed a lot of gold gear, gathered resources, and killed other players.
- There were gigantic battles with hundreds of players, where even groups of 20 members could win against groups of over 60 players if they coordinated.
Unfortunately, the game’s servers were shut down. Since then, an emptiness has spread in his heart, and all the MMORPGs he played afterward felt like cheap copies of his favorite game. He never felt the same excitement as he did back in his favorite MMORPG.
This is what MMORPGs look like in 2025:
The MMORPG Shadowbane Leaves a Void in the Heart
Which MMORPG is it? The Reddit user’s favorite MMORPG is Shadowbane. It is a free-to-play game by Ubisoft that launched in March 2003. Unfortunately, the servers were shut down on July 1, 2009.
The uniqueness was that it had large-scale PvP areas as one of the first MMORPGs. The majority of the game world was a battlefield. Additionally, it was one of the first MMORPGs where the world changed based on players’ actions. They could tear down buildings and engage in terraforming.
Do others feel the same way? Other players also write that they miss old video games from their childhood and youth.
- ZantetsukenX says: “I first played Haven and Hearth over 12 years ago, and it still has mechanics that I wish would be adopted in other survival/crafting games.”
- Fullhps also knows the issue: “I feel the same way about Dark Age of Camelot. It was my first game, and there’s no other game like it. I’ve played sooooo many MMOs, but nothing will ever compare to your first game, unfortunately, you’ll be hunting that dragon.”
- Dodgy-Llama has found a substitute, but: “Ragnarok Online was my thing. The people I met, the e-drama, good times. I’ve played on some private servers over the years. Never quite as good as the original.”
