What error occurred in the game? On Reddit, a player reports his experiences with the quest The Bitter Pill
from Windrose. As part of the quest, a hostile ship must be boarded and a captive saved.
The player set out on his journey and started a fight with the hostile crew of three level-10 ships. Of course, a real showdown among pirates was supposed to have taken place. After defeating the opposing pirates, he jumped back onto his own ship and sailed away.
While sailing away, he realized that he hadn’t completed the quest at all. He only checked the journal afterwards and realized that he had needed to talk to the captive on the ship.
What are the consequences? When he realized the mistake, the last enemy ship was already sunk in the water. Thus, he could not directly complete the quest.

Can the quest still be completed? On Reddit, other players report that they experienced the same error. Some managed to jump after the sinking ship, talk to the captive, and swim back to the surface in time without drowning.
Another user had something similar happen in a multiplayer session. He and a friend were in dialogue with the NPC when another crew member started sinking the ship.
The user skipped the dialogue and then swam outside. However, his buddy was not as successful.
If you do not have reflexes as fast as the two users, you still have another option. You can wait some time until the ship respawns. Then you can also talk to the captive above the water surface again.
