This is how Cold War looks on PS5: If you have been diligently playing the new Call of Duty: Cold War on PS4, you can now comfortably switch to PS5.
You can even partially do this with an update, which you need to download on PS5. However, to avoid any issues during the transfer, we show you all the available options here.
CoD Cold War – Transferring from PS4 to PS5
This is how the transfer works: It depends on which version you purchased on PS4. Whether digital or on CD – Cold War can be transferred. Here we provide an overview of all versions and the transfer methods:
- Digital Standard Edition:
- If you have this PS4 version, you do not necessarily need a paid update on PS5. Thanks to backward compatibility, you can simply continue playing on PS5 – but without next-gen features.
- For an additional fee, you can also purchase a next-gen update – then you can use the digital version with all the features that PS5 has to offer.
- Standard Edition on CD:
- This version can also be played on PS5 without issues – however, your PS5 needs a drive for it, and next-gen features are not available.
- For an extra fee, you can also apply the next-gen update here – keep in mind that to play, the PS4 disc must be in the drive, even though you are playing the PS5 version.
- Digital Cross-Gen Edition:
- Here, you can switch platforms without any issues. On PS5, you will also have the next-gen features available.
- Cross-Gen Edition on CD:
- Just like the digital edition, you can play cross-platform here. The next-gen features are also available on PS5. However, you also need a PS5 with a drive and the PS4 disc to play.
- Ultimate Edition:
- The same applies as with the Cross-Gen Edition. Without a paid update, you can play on PS5 and use the next-gen features.
Do I need to upgrade my PS4 version? No, you don’t have to spend money to play your PS4 version on PS5. However, you will need to download Cold War again on PS5 or install it via CD.
If you don’t want to invest more money, you can just continue playing the PS4 version on PS5. However, you also won’t be utilizing the features that PS5 offers.
If you want the full next-gen experience, you should install the paid update. Then you will basically be playing the PS5 version.

You should note this: Previously, some players complained that the PS5 automatically selects the PS4 version. Therefore, if you just click on “Download,” the PS4 version could be downloaded. So use the instructions we have provided here.
This is especially frustrating if you already own the Cross-Gen Edition and can upgrade to the PS5 version for free. So make sure you select the correct version.
