With Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Ubisoft launches into the next adventure of the elite agent series. The trailers are well received by fans. However, there is one change that has not been well accepted.
What’s new? Yesterday, on May 9th, Ubisoft presented its new military shooter Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It will be released in October 2019. Pre-order customers can even play 3 days earlier.
This Sparks Excitement
What fans are looking forward to: In the 10-minute gameplay trailer for Breakpoint, many cool new features were showcased that players will encounter on the island of Auroa. A new injury system adds more realism when your character limps due to a gunshot wound.
Players are also excited about the setting with the remote island in the Pacific. Additionally, this time you are “the hunted” and must defend yourself against the vicious Wolves. The enemies are said to be quite capable.
The improved stealth elements are favored by players. Now you can camouflage yourself even better and cover yourself with mud, for instance.
The fact that Breakpoint offers different classes that suit various playstyles like sniper or assault is also well received.

Fans Are Upset About This Change
Although a large part of Breakpoint initially elicits positive reactions from most fans, there is also criticism. Particularly, one change is repeatedly mentioned: the absence of AI companions.
Why is the allied AI important? Players who dared to venture into an adventure alone in the predecessor to Breakpoint, Ghost Recon Wildlands, were immediately assigned three AI teammates by the game. This way, your team consisted of four people.
The non-human teammates supported you in combat. They could revive injured allies or stood ready for simultaneous shooting when multiple enemies had to be eliminated at the same time. However, there was also criticism about the AI in Wildlands because it often acted clumsily in many situations and was sometimes unusable.

This is new in Breakpoint: Ubisoft announced that players in Breakpoint are truly alone when playing solo. No team will be filled with AI companions. The simultaneous shoot function remains, but now with drones.
How fans are reacting: On Reddit, users write about the trailer:
- “I love all of this… except that there are no AI companions. I mean, come on. This is a Ghost Recon, not Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell. Being part of a squad is part of the deal”
- “AI teammates should be there since they are invisible to the enemy. No matter what happens. It has been essential for Ghost Recon for years”
Another Reddit thread comments on the subject: Breakpoint looks good, but “no allied soldiers” hurts. The author writes that he has been playing Ghost Recon since the original games. He doesn’t think it’s good that they are transitioning from six players with customization in previous titles to a single-player experience.
Others are creating memes about the AI and sharing them in the Breakpoint subreddit. Among them: “You don’t have to fix the AI companions when you just remove them from the game.” Or this meme with Thanos titled 2 steps forward, 1 step back:

Conclusion: Many fans are dissatisfied with the changes to the AI. Although it wasn’t particularly good in Wildlands and received a lot of criticism, very few want to completely do without it.
What do you think? Do you miss the AI in Breakpoint or do you not care as long as there’s the simultaneous shooting with drones? Let us know in the comments.
