The new “Arena modes” in Overwatch are quite fun. We explain what the special features are.
In Overwatch, the Patch 1.11/2.13 and the associated anniversary of Overwatch have been active since yesterday (23.05.2017). In addition to the new items from the loot boxes and minor balance changes, there are also two new game modes in the arcade: 1v1 – Limited Duel and 3v3 Sudden Elimination. We take a look at the two game modes and reveal how they work.
1v1 – Limited Duel
The “1v1 – Limited Duel” is very similar to the previous 1v1 arena mode, but there is a huge difference. Both players can only choose from 3 heroes at the beginning of a match! These heroes are random and the same for both players.
Who can outsmart their opponent better and wins the mind game for the best counter? All heroes except Lúcio can appear in this mode. It is played in a “Best of 9” format – whoever claims 5 victories wins the match.
3v3 Sudden Elimination
In the second game mode, “3v3 Sudden Elimination,” 3 players on 2 teams face each other and play a round of “Team Deathmatch”.
But there is also a special rule here that adds excitement and variety. All heroes are available; however, once a round is won, the team cannot use those heroes in the next round.
In plain terms: If you are sniped by an incredibly good Widowmaker, you will not see a Widowmaker in the next round! It is played in a “Best of 5” mode – the team with 3 victories wins the entire match.
Furthermore, there is a new “Sudden Death” system in all “Arena” matches (which include these two modes). If a certain amount of time has passed without a winner being determined (for example, because a player is just running in circles and hiding), a warning will appear. 30 seconds later, a control point appears in the middle of the map. Whoever captures this point will be declared the winner. This forces a final battle and inevitably leads to a swift end.
What do you think of the new arena modes?
Mein-MMO says: The special rules for 3v3 are good and add extra excitement to the game mode. It was the missing touch that made this mode truly appealing and interesting. Above all, it “forces” players to move away from their “I only play Hero X” mindset and engage with other characters as well. This will ultimately benefit players in quick match or ranked mode.
Patch 1.11 also brought buffs and nerfs – here are the details!
