Two of the most loyal companions from Luffy’s crew are the swordsman Zoro and the cook Sanji. For some reason, the two do not get along, but in times of need, they are there for their crew. To reflect this unusual rivalry even more accurately, the manga of One Piece has included a funny detail.
How does the rivalry between the two manifest? The two are constantly arguing and provoking each other. This leads to funny situations where Nami often becomes the mediator.
Both Zoro and Sanji are very strong members of Luffy’s crew. In the great MeinMMO ranking, we placed them in the top three of the strongest crew members.
Zoro is one of the strongest swordsmen in One Piece, while Sanji knocks out most opponents with his kicks. Therefore, they compete with each other simply based on their strengths and compete over who can defeat more opponents than the other.

What is this funny detail? To emphasize the rivalry between the two, creator Eiichiro Oda included one thing: Zoro never calls Sanji by his name in the manga. The swordsman has never spoken the cook’s name, but instead has always come up with nicknames for him. Conversely, it has happened that Sanji called Zoro by name.
Zoro often jokes about Sanji’s love for cooking in his free time. For example, he calls Sanji:
- Frying Pan Wielder
- Spoon Wielder
- Pea Counter
- Onion Slicer
Sanji has also used Zoro’s spiral eyebrow as an insult. But Sanji does not let that slide and counters with nicknames that usually revolve around Zoro’s hair color:
- Moss Pear
- Spinach Skull
- Saber Guy
- Sword Wielder
Besides that, less creative insults like “stupid” come up when things get heated. In the anime, Zoro has actually called Sanji by name, so this detail only applies to the manga, which is published weekly in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Who are the two actually? Zoro is the first official member of Luffy’s pirate crew, who had to fight Mister 7 even before joining the Straw Hat crew. He starts off as a bounty hunter, earning his living by capturing pirates. But by joining Luffy’s crew, he suddenly becomes a pirate himself.
Sanji is a talented cook. That’s why he only uses his legs in battle, as he needs his hands for cooking. Sanji’s actor Taz Skylar also had to find this out, as he had to train several hours a day for the Netflix series.
Both owe a lot to Luffy, which is why they have sworn eternal loyalty to him and support him on his way to becoming the Pirate King.
