On Steam, a development studio is currently working on a game that is meant to fulfill the dream of many children. It’s about castles, knights, and rule.

What kind of game is it? Bergfried is a strategy game set in the Middle Ages, making you the ruler over your own little landscape. You are responsible for land and people and must protect them. For this, you will primarily expand a keep into a full castle.

However, the game is not a simple building simulation. You must also finance the construction with resources, so you need skilled craftsmen and workers to take care of it. At the same time, the castle must also be defended; a few empty towers won’t keep the enemies at bay.

What about the battles? Bergfried is also a real-time strategy (RTS) game where you must protect your citizens from enemy rulers. They are eyeing your castle and attack you regularly.

However, you can defend yourself and train your own troops. The first scenes already show various units that can be controlled in typical RTS fashion.

A typical rock-paper-scissors system applies here, where your spearmen work well against cavalry, but cannot do anything against archers, who in turn have trouble hitting a rider.

Does it fulfill the childhood wish? Yes, that is precisely what the game aims to achieve. You don’t simply choose from a castle but can design it yourself using various tools. This allows your castle to elegantly wrap around a mountain that enemies can only climb with difficulty.

The walls can be easily drawn with the mouse but can also be enlarged by adding an additional level. The game also aims to allow non-gamers to build beautiful castles, making it suitable for children as well.
