With Endless Legend 2, a new 4X turn-based strategy game is coming to Steam. The sequel to the first part released in 2014 is very reminiscent of Civilization, but comes with some special twists. Early testers are thrilled.
What kind of game is this?
- Endless Legend is at its core a classic 4X strategy game. You have to build cities, supply them with food, and boost industry, science, and prosperity.
- Similar to Civilization, you can choose from different races, but in a fantasy world full of magic and strange beings.
- At the beginning of 2025, the indie developers from Amplitude Studios announced that 10 years after part 1, Endless Legend 2 will be released in Summer, initially in Early Access.
What makes Endless Legend 2 so special: The gameplay is similar to Civilization. You build cities, train troops, and explore a world laid out in hexagonal fields in turns. Victory conditions are quite classic: Domination, Diplomacy, Economy, Wonders, or Research.
However, there is a special victory condition in Endless Legend: Quests. Similar to Warhammer 40,000: Gladius or ZEPHON, each race has various tasks it can fulfill to achieve a victory.
In principle, this replaces the classic campaign and brings a role-playing factor into the game. This is enhanced by heroes and council members with various effects.
Compared to its predecessor, Endless Legend 2 features a “Drought” mechanic: At a certain point, the sea level lowers, and new areas of the map become accessible. This changes the dynamics in the middle of the game.
A lot of exciting content for solo players
There are now reports from the first testers who were able to try out two of the factions for 125 turns. Although the quest victories are not yet implemented, there is great praise for the mechanics.
Colleague Peter Bathge from GameStar, for example, writes in the preview report on Endless Legend 2: “The early version of the Early Access has already appealed to me a lot. Graphics, atmosphere, the story campaign, and the cool feature with the ebb, there is a lot of exciting content for solo players!”
PCGamer also praises Endless Legend 2. The report states that especially the completely unique mechanics of the races are excellent. However, the yet-to-be-revealed “narrative” victories sound particularly exciting for the tester.
Even the first part can regularly attract tens of thousands of players – despite its age. Endless Legend 2 is set to start in Early Access on Steam in Summer 2025. Unlike Civilization, it does not offer multiplayer.
In the GameStar preview report, it is mentioned that Endless Legend 2 takes a direction opposite to Civilization 7, which could very well make the game a real competitor. Because the latest Civ is struggling: Civilization 7 is performing so poorly on Steam that Firaxis is shifting content and first needs to repair
