With BitCraft a new game has been introduced, which calls itself a “new type of MMORPG.” It combines elements from survival games, RPGs, as well as construction and strategy games. Visually, BitCraft gives off decent Zelda vibes.
What kind of MMORPG is this? The sandbox MMORPG BitCraft comes from the Californian indie studio Clockwork Labs. The developer team released the first trailer on September 16.
In BitCraft, you start as an entity infused with a mystical power, which still needs to acquire all its abilities – essentially naked. You play together with others in a single, large world that constantly changes and with which you can interact. There are no individual servers.
This world is procedurally generated and is supposed to be large enough that you can build entire cities from your villages and create “global trade centers.” Politics is also intended to play a role, as every city will need a leader.
Visually, BitCraft somewhat resembles Breath of the Wild or the new Tribes of Midgard, mixed with some elements from the survival hit Valheim. We have embedded the trailer here for you:
“Collaboration over Combat”
What features does the game offer? According to the studio, BitCraft aims to focus more on cooperation than combat, placing a strong emphasis on the PvE aspect of the game. You will find in BitCraft:
- Skills like farming, fishing, mining, and forestry, all of which you can improve
- Cities and fortresses that you build and manage together with other players
- the “wilderness” outside your village, where you can find rare materials and ruins filled with “lost technology”
As a sandbox game, BitCraft allows you the freedom to choose how to proceed. You can work as a hunter and gatherer, build the city together with friends and strangers, or explore the world as a brave adventurer.
Cities are even expected to form huge empires that span continents and oceans. However, we still don’t know what the combat system will look like and how important it will be. PvP battles are not planned for the moment, but they are not ruled out either.
How can I join? The registration for the pre-alpha of BitCraft is already running. You can sign up on the official BitCraft website. If you fill out a small survey, you increase your chances of being selected for the test.
BitCraft offers crossplay, although no other specific platforms are known yet apart from PC. A release date is also still open.
Although BitCraft is an indie game, that doesn’t have to be a disadvantage. MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus even believes that several large studios could learn something from the bravery of indie teams:
