If you’ve always wanted to play as the cops in the chase sequences of a GTA game, you should check out the free demo of The Precinct on Steam.
What kind of game is it? The developers of The Precinct call their game a “Neo-Noir Action Sandbox.” You play as the police officer Nick Cordell Jr. and must solve crimes in the fictional city of Averno. In addition, you investigate a murder case that is connected to your family.
The developers explain what police life will look like in The Precinct in a gameplay trailer:
What does the trailer show? The Precinct is played from a top-down perspective, similar to the first GTA from 1997. As a player, you view the action from above. The developers promise a vibrant city that you can explore on foot, in a patrol car, or with a police helicopter. Visually, Averno resembles a typical large city in the US East Coast.
Chases like in GTA – but you are the pursuer
The crimes in the city are procedurally generated by the game, ranging from parking violations to bank robberies. In the background, criminal gangs are vying for dominance in Averno, and you can influence their power dynamics through your police work.
If a criminal flees the scene by car, you pursue them with patrol cars and helicopters. And so you don’t have to handle the situation alone, you call for backup in the form of roadblocks or special task vehicles.
The car and helicopter chases look slick – and at the same time, this is where the greatest potential for chaos lies. The environments also contain destructible elements like fruit crates innocently sitting by the roadside.

When will The Precinct be released? The game does not yet have a release date, but its release on Steam is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024. A playable demo is expected to be available at the “Steam Next Fest.” If you want, you can try The Precinct on Steam for free starting October 14, 2024.
