Stars Reach is the new MMORPG by Raph Koster. MeinMMO reveals who should check it out at the early access launch on August 18, 2026… and who should not.
What is Stars Reach? Behind the new SciFi MMORPG stands Raph Koster, one of the most experienced MMO developers of the past decades. As creative lead, he worked on Ultima Online and later led the development of Star Wars Galaxies.
His new game Stars Reach also promises a sandbox experience, but this time it takes you into a vast universe – similar to what you might know from No Man’s Sky, only as an MMO. With your powerful terraforming tools, you can shape the planets to your liking.
You will build cities, form governments, and embark on various careers – from fighter to trader or journalist to governor, diverse options await you. The focus is on cooperative PvE. PvP only occurs if a group sets corresponding rules for their territory.
Fascinating sandbox universe, but is that enough?
What is perhaps the greatest strength of Stars Reach? The new MMORPG promises not only a sandbox with many freedoms, but also provides you with a variety of tools to actually shape the sand and leverage the underlying simulation.
Imagine a river that you redirect into a desert area, creating an oasis over time. Or you process resources using elemental forces like heat or a timeline to obtain completely new materials. And if you hunt a native species on your planet too extensively or destroy their habitats, they may become extinct forever.
At the same time, the developers have the option to provide new systems with planets, moons, and fresh content through the wormholes that hold the vast universe together. Raph Koster explained this with an exciting comparison: “Imagine all the Minecraft servers in the world being connected by hyperlinks all at once.”
What could be the weaknesses of Stars Reach? With procedurally generated content, there is always the risk that it feels generic and interchangeable. Though designed topographies and a variety of parameters aim to avoid this trap, practice must prove whether the approach works.
It is also unclear how much frustration potential the enormous freedom of the sandbox will possess. To what extent will players be guided initially? How easily can they set their own goals? And what about more toxic personalities? Can these significantly undermine the enjoyment of others?
And right now, we do not know how the gameplay of Stars Reach will feel. How much fun will the more arcade-like action combat provide? How well does it work to move around the planet and zoom through space moments later? All of this still needs to be shown by the early access version.
Give it a chance or not?
