For the action RPG Path of Exile, the development studio Grinding Gear Games will soon release Synthesis, the next major expansion. This brings a number of new features, including the ability to craft your own dungeons in a special way.
What is Synthesis? The new expansion for the successful hack ‘n’ slash Path of Exile introduces the mysterious character Canvas. For this character, you will complete quests to find fragments of his memory. To do this, he will open portals to gameplay areas for you.
The more fragments you need to find there, the harder it is to master these areas, where many monsters are present. You will ultimately use these fragments in the so-called Memory Nexus to build dungeons. Something similar was already possible with the Incursions update.

How does dungeon building work? The fragments you collect are essentially rooms of a dungeon that you can build together. However, not every fragment fits together. You must proceed similarly to a puzzle. This way, you slowly build paths to existing dungeon rooms, connecting them to gradually restore Canvas’s memory.
In doing so, it is necessary that you also enter the rooms you place in order to continue building. However, there are monsters in these rooms that need to be defeated. At the end, there awaits a boss monster and rewards. The individual rooms can also be equipped with “mods,” causing monsters to, for example, move faster.
What is special about this system? You not only face monsters and boss enemies, but also time. You need to be quick because the fragments disappear after a certain time. You must string the fragments together quickly, master the rooms swiftly, and then defeat the boss to earn rewards. The next run may see the dungeon look entirely different.
A comprehensive expansion
What else does Synthesis bring? The expansion has quite a bit more to offer:
- A revision of the soundtrack.
- You collect “Fractured Items” which you can transform into a special, modded weapon at the synthesizer in the Memory Nexus.
- The “spell system” will be revised, making it interesting again to cast spells manually rather than using totems.
- Two new “archetypes” will be introduced, the Chaos Spellcaster and the Holy Spellcaster.
- Some curses will become more useful against boss opponents.
When does Synthesis come out? The expansion will be released on March 8 for the PC version of Path of Exile. The Xbox One version is scheduled for March 11.
What about the PS4 version? Grind Gear Games plan to release the PlayStation 4 version of Path of Exile sometime in March. The team will announce an exact date soon.
