G2 Esports has won the Grand Final of the LEC. They overcame their biggest rival Fnatic with 3:1. Particularly dominant were the German-Turk Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik and the newcomer Martin “Yike” Sundelin. They played the exact same champion combo three times.
What a match it was! Compared to last year, a new tournament was introduced – the Season Final. There, the 6 best teams of the LEC from the entire year competed for a spot in the World Championship and a prize pool of 160,000 Euros.
G2 Esports started in the upper half of the tournament bracket due to their good performances this year, while Fnatic had to start directly in the losers bracket as the 5th seed. However, both teams made it to the final, which unfortunately was anything but exciting.
The matches were one-sided, and there was no doubt that G2 would win the tournament. This was particularly due to the strong combo from Toplane and Jungle.
Which champions did the two lanes play? In two out of three victories, BrokenBlade played K’Sante in the Toplane and Yike played Rell in the Jungle. With this very tanky combo, Fnatic could not cope, probably also because their regular Toplaner Oscarin was injured and replaced by top laner “Wunder”.
On average only 25 minutes to victory
How did the matches go? Right from the first match, it was clear that Fnatic would have huge problems winning the tournament. BrokenBlade played a K’Sante with strong stats. He ended the round with 9-1-8 and even secured a triple kill in the meantime.
Yike also impressed with 3-1-18 on Rell, and Caps achieved a 7-1-12 Azir in the middle. Only the Botlane performed somewhat evenly. The match ended after 27 minutes.
On Reddit, there was already discussion after this first match about whether BrokenBlade stands as a Toplaner on a level with the greatest Asian players. Some definitely see him as competitive at the World Championship.
Here you can check out the triple kill by BrokenBlade:
In the second match, the bot lane with Hans Sama and Mikyx also impressed. The round ended with 26 kills and only 10 deaths in favor of G2 Esports. Here it was over after 25 minutes.
- BrokenBlade managed to achieve a 5-1-1 Olaf
- Yike finished with a 0-0-13 Maokai
- Dominant was Hans Sama with a 12-1-5 Kai’Sa
In the third encounter, Fnatic managed a small victory. The bot lane won the early game, and many were excited about Noah on Kai’Sa. The Korean is considered a great talent, but he would often lose his nerves.
However, the victory did little to change the end result. In the fourth match, G2 Esports again secured a very dominant victory, needing only 23 minutes for that. Yike had a great game with 1-3-22 and ended up with a KDA of 8.1 and a kill participation of 73.8% across the four rounds. Those are incredibly strong stats.
What does the tournament result mean? G2 Esports won the Season Final, securing 65,000 Euros in prize money and a direct entry into the Worlds in October. Fnatic and the MAD Lions also advance directly to the group stage of the World Championship.
Team BDS finished in 4th place in the tournament. They now have to enter a qualifier against the American team Golden Guardians. The latter has known this since August 13, which led to some criticism. The match will take place on October 9.
German streamer attacked after the event in France
What happened after the event? The German streamers NoWay4u and Tolkin accompanied the final between G2 Esports and Fnatic in a co-stream. They commented on the event in their own way live on site in Montpellier, which was somewhat different from the official shoutcast.
However, after the event, there was an unpleasant incident. NoWay4u was attacked, threatened with a knife, and beaten several times. However, he is doing well under the circumstances. More about this here:
