In League of Legends, the two top teams from Europe faced off. Ultimately, it was an action by G2 Esports that tilted the game in their favor and led them to victory over Fnatic. G2 Esports is back in first place in the LoL league LEC.
What action decided the game? It was a classic Baron steal by G2’s jungler, Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski. After 27 minutes, Fnatic was ahead, having 4000 gold more, and everything was actually going in their favor.
But Fnatic opted for a relatively uncontrolled and unprepared attack on the Baron. This action is called a “coinflip Baron” in LoL – 50% chance it works and you can secure the strong buff, 50% chance it does not work and you give the buff away. It’s like a coin toss.
And the coin fell on the wrong side for Fnatic. Fnatic diligently attacked the Baron and brought it down to 2000 HP, then Jankos jumped into the Baron pit with Olaf, using a blast cone, and stole the Baron. Although Jankos died during his escape, the match only went in one direction from there.
Eight minutes later, G2 Esports won the match with 11-6.
This is being discussed: Fnatic fans are disappointed by the action and the match progress. In their view, Fnatic clearly seemed to be on the path to victory: the Baron action was simply hollow.
It is being discussed that Olaf had no flash left and had to use the blast cone to jump to the Baron. Fnatic should have destroyed this blast cone earlier, observers said afterward.
Fnatic is considered the team in European LoL with the best early game, but such decisions during the mid-game cost the victory.
G2 uses Reddit to victory over Fnatic
What else was remarkable: The top laner of G2, Wunder, chose Janna, a supporter, which is an unusual pick for him. This led to G2 Esports competing with 2 supporters and no tank.
He later said he chose Janna because he read on Reddit that she had a 56% win rate. Wunder then played 1 or 2 players with her and felt comfortable playing her.
I never really played Janna, so that probably means you don’t need much skill for her. Or I’m just a supporter at heart.
