Esports has long been more than just a small niche known to a few people. For several years, this scene has been huge, and many fans are rooting for their favorite teams. Now, a professional in League of Legends has answered questions about Esports posed by retirees who may not be familiar with this term.
Which professional is involved? The LoL player Josedeodo, or simply Jose, has been playing League of Legends professionally since 2017. Since 2025, he has been the jungler for Team Liquid. On the associated YouTube channel, the team uploaded a video featuring Jose, where he is bombarded with questions from retirees about his profession.
These included many questions about him, such as how he got into video games or whether he plays all day, which he mostly does as a professional. While the retirees ask one question after another, it becomes clear to them that Esports is not that different from the sports they are familiar with. At the end of the video, Jose shows the retirees some gameplay footage from tournaments.
Of course, the older generation did not exactly know what was happening on the screen, but they were surprised that, just like in regular sports, there are commentators who accompany the game. Jose says at the end: “Yes, it’s basically like regular sports.”
The professional also shows the retirees the downsides of Esports
What are the downsides? The question about sports betting was also raised. What is common in regular sports is also prevalent in Esports. Jose mentions that the hardest part of sports betting is the reactions of the fans.
He gives a direct example: While playing against the weakest team in a tournament, they lost, and he received many unpleasant reactions as a result. Jose himself did not want to share the content directly, but he says that there were even worse messages among them.
The retirees were surprised at how much money is involved in gaming: Another question was about the money and how an Esports team even earns it. According to Jose, just like in regular sports, there are several sources.
The professional mentions, among others, the viewers who watch their matches and possibly advertisements during them. Additionally, further money is earned through merchandise and sales of fan items. Last but not least, sponsors are, of course, also mentioned.
The retiree Felica expresses surprise after the answer and says the following: “Oh, I didn’t know that so much money is in gaming. Very interesting.”
