New items in World of Warcraft make your items even more powerful. This makes every “Mythic+” dungeon a piece of cake.
Since May 13, 2026, you can farm the item “Ascending Void Core” in World of Warcraft. This gives your gear a strong boost and allows you to reach even higher item levels than ever before.
The effects of these upgrades are substantial. You can receive up to 10 item levels for a single click – however, you will need to farm a bit of materials beforehand.
How do you get the Ascending Void Core? To do this, you need to complete a quest for Decimus in the Twisting Nether, and you have to do it 4 times. If you have done that each week, you will be done for this week. If you missed some weeks, you can still catch up this week.
After completing the questline, you will be able to obtain the “Ascending Void Core.” You receive the Void Cores after collecting and combining 5 “Ascending Void Shards”.
The Void Cores can then be used for significant upgrades to your equipment.
Where can you find Void Shards? Void Shards drop from many forms of endgame content. You are guaranteed to receive them:
- From heroic and mythic raid bosses.
- From dungeons of difficulty M+10 and higher.
- From depths of level 11 from chests that you open with a key.
- From the equipment chests of nightmare hunts.
Additionally, you can occasionally find them from ritual sites – most often at level 5, but much rarer at levels 1 to 4.
Void Cores make items overpowered
Which items can be upgraded? Once you have collected 5 “Ascending Void Shards,” you can combine them into an “Ascending Void Core.” You can then apply this item to another item that meets one of the following conditions:
- It is an item made with heroic emblems.
- It is an item made with mythic emblems.
- It is a path of the hero item that has already been fully upgraded.
- It is a path of the myth item that has already been fully upgraded.
Depending on which items you apply the Void Core to, the item level changes as follows:

How strong are the effects? Basically, this can probably best be summarized as “massive.” An item level boost of 9 or 10 levels on multiple equipment slots can significantly enhance your performance – regardless of your role. So if you have any goals in Season 1 of Midnight that you still can’t fully reach, then farm “Ascending Void Core” to squeeze a bit more performance out of your character.
What should the Void Core be used for? Basically, this is a question that can often be answered with “it depends.” Generally, however, the best option seems to be to have a mythic weapon crafted by a profession at item level 285 (requires 80 Mythic emblems) and then perform an upgrade to item level 295 using the Void Core. This is likely to be the best upgrade for most characters.
Cortyn says: Even though the questline took quite a bit of time, I am a little surprised at how significant the boost is. Being able to give an already powerful weapon 10 more item levels provides a massive performance increase that can squeeze a few thousand DPS out of your character. It definitely motivates me to take on a few challenges in the upcoming weeks that I haven’t been able to complete so far.
Even though there is criticism that this is yet another depreciation of gear and a somewhat opaque “catch-up” mechanic in the middle of the season, I find the implementation here to be good. Since only gear that is already among the best that can be obtained can be upgraded, you still have to play a bit for the upgrades. Whether this helps against WoW burnout, I cannot say yet.
