For the first time in the series, cover and destruction are supposed to play an important role in battles. For example, soldiers can seek cover behind buildings and other objects, and if a bullet does not penetrate them, it will not cause damage.
Now the developers have revealed some details about the destruction of the game world. It will be more extensive than expected, you will not be able to conduct an exterminatus that destroys the entire planet… at least not at the current state.
You can change the battlefield with force, but not completely destroy it
The battlefield is destructible: Dave Petry, who is responsible for battles at Creative Assembly (Battle Product Owner), explained in an interview with the English-language magazine PCGamer, that destruction will play an important role. Thus, you can not only use things like forests as cover but can also simply destroy them if they are in your way:
You have all these tactical options and then strategic elements that can arise from them. One of the really big and exciting things we are implementing here is that destruction will come into play.
This forest – if you don’t like it, you don’t have to keep it. If you find that this annoying forest is in your way and you can’t see around it, then you can get rid of it. Or you can use it to hide in.
Can everything be destroyed? No, Petry explained at the same time that you cannot destroy the entire game world. Therefore, say goodbye to the thought of being able to lay waste to the entire battlefield. The person in charge stated that they have restricted themselves to areas where destruction makes real sense and contributes meaningfully to the tactical gameplay. So Petry said:
To make it very clear: Not absolutely everything is destructible, right? We have limited ourselves to areas where it really works, makes sense, and gives the feeling that it contributes to depth.
