Yesterday, 3 new episodes of the fourth season of Critical Role’s animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina” premiered on Amazon Prime – and a surprise appearance made the hearts of MeinMMO editor Caro (and her as well) scream loudly.
Spoiler alert! In this article, we discuss events and a special appearance from season 4, episode 7 of The Legend of Vox Machina.
In the seventh episode of the fourth season “The Spirits of Whitestone,” an unknown person in the animated series helps the heroes out of a pinch, which brings a lot of joy to Critical Role fans, including me.
The group finds themselves in a mix of a secret lab and dungeon, beneath Percy’s estate in Whitestone, where the Briarwoods had previously taken over.
There, Vex falls into a room where many creepy puppets hang from the ceiling, frightening the ranger. I had to sit up a bit from my shrimp position on the couch… my Spider- Critical Role senses were tingling.
Finally, Vex’s gaze, along with that of the viewers, falls upon a figure in the shadows. I saw a white strand in black hair, her posture, and I was torn apart: “LAUDNA!”
My scream startled my friend next to me so much that she screamed too, not knowing what had suddenly bitten me. I had to explain to her, as someone who had only seen the animated series on Amazon Prime, who this was. Namely, none other than one of my absolute favorites from Critical Role and a community fan favorite.
Laudna can also be seen in the intro to Bells Hells:
Critical Role connects two campaigns much earlier than expected
The person in the shadows was Laudna from the Bells Hells, after The Mighty Nein from the third campaign of Critical Role. While it is a surprise that she was seen in Vox Machina, it is not unwarranted. After all, Laudna has a close connection to Whitestone and the Briarwoods – and if you look closer, this was not her first appearance in the series.
Laudna is one of the individuals who hung as a threat to Vox Machina already in the first season at Suntree in Whitestone. There, she was dressed along with the lifeless bodies of 6 other individuals in the heroes’ clothes and publicly displayed on a rope.
Laudna also shares this with Vex, who does not understand why Laudna is now… somewhat alive in front of her. The pale gray woman cannot explain this either. She simply woke up hanging from the tree. From that moment on, she finally heard the voice of her “mistress” in her head, namely that of Delilah Briarwood.
In campaign 3, Laudna’s connection to Delilah is further deepened, but neither the Amazon series nor I want to spoil too much for you.
If you want to know more about this, this video summarizes Laudna’s connection to Whitestone and her involvement in the series:
An appearance that is one of my favorite moments of the season
I absolutely did not expect Laudna as a kind of surprise guest in Vox Machina. In the original first campaign, this encounter between her and Vex was not included at all. Laudna is my favorite of the Bells Hells and also among my overall favorite characters from Critical Role.
All the more exciting is that this moment only works if you know exactly who you have in front of you. Probably a lot of viewers, just like my friend, with whom I watched, didn’t know why this was such a strong moment.
Overall, episodes 7-9 of the fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina completely resonated with me. Not only Laudna’s appearance, but also the teased bard battle from episode 8 and the emotional damage from episode 9 totally hooked me!
How about you? Do you like the new episodes? And did you react similarly to Laudna? Feel free to write it in the comments!
I am very glad that the fourth season was able to convince me so strongly after all. The first episode alone made my start somewhat rocky: Vox Machina Season 4: Episode 1 builds a lot of anticipation, but I regret having watched it right away
