A new role-playing game on Steam aims to simulate life in a Roman city and leave you as many paths as possible to navigate it – whether you commit the crime of your life or prefer to engage in politics.
Which game is being referred to? We are talking about Streets of Fortuna, a new sandbox RPG from Kitfox Games. They are also the publishers of the settlement simulation Dwarf Fortress, which has received very positive ratings on Steam. The developers also provided advisory support for Streets of Fortuna.
Streets of Fortuna simulates life in a Roman city around the year 500 A.D. It is inspired by the then-capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople. The game simulates the daily routines of 1,000 residents, with whom you can interact to earn your bread in the city of Fortuna.
You can watch a trailer for the game here:
Live like in ancient Constantinople
What does the trailer show? Visually, the game opts for a stylized look, but the world is meant to be very interactive. Everything that is not bolted down in the world can be taken – whether that stuff already belongs to someone else doesn’t matter, as long as you are not caught.
In Fortuna, however, you can earn your livelihood not only through theft. You could also seek an honest trade, such as becoming a cook, merchant, or priest. According to the developers’ statements on Steam, the focus at release will primarily be on making the gameplay as fun as possible for thieves.
The NPCs are said to be, unlike in many other role-playing games, not just a backdrop: Talk to whoever you want, ask them for directions, or follow them home to find out what kind of people they are. You can use this knowledge to charm someone – or gain political advantages if you want to compete against the lord of the city in an unpleasant manner.
When will the game be released? There is currently no release window for Streets of Fortuna, but it already has a shop page on Steam.
