With Final Fantasy 16, today the next big RPG from Square Enix has been released and presents itself in a new, unusually dark guise. However, it was not only the atmosphere that was adjusted, but also the combat system.
And this seems to disappoint some players. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier addressed this in a tweet and at the same time names an alternative for fans of turn-based battles: Octopath Traveler 2.

If you look at Final Fantasy XVI and think “My God, what has happened to this series? I miss turn-based role-playing games,” then do yourself a favor and get Octopath Traveler 2, one of the best turn-based RPGs ever made.

But they don’t stand at the same level as the main series of the FF franchise. I want the impressive graphics (although HD2D is beautiful) and the cinematic staging with turn-based gameplay.”
The Twitter user TheZaius asks Jason Schreier if “Octopath Traveler 2 is as good as Final Fantasy 6.” He replies: “Nothing can ever compete with nostalgia, but yes, Octopath Traveler 2 is one of the greats [in the RPG genre].”
What kind of game is Octopath Traveler? Octopath Traveler is a turn-based role-playing game from the eponymous series by Square Enix, whose first part was released in 2018. The second part followed in February, receiving 96% positive reviews on Steam.
In Octopath Traveler 2, you choose one of eight travelers to embark on the adventure. Characteristic of the series is the pixelated HD-2D graphics. You can get both parts on Steam, for PlayStation, and for Nintendo Switch.
The Steam reviews are filled with praise for the RPG. darkmoon6.665 writes: “One of the best turn-based role-playing games to be released in recent times. The gameplay is a fantastic homage to the old Final Fantasy games.”
