MeinMMO author Johanna is afraid of the ocean and thus actually has no good prerequisites for playing Subnautica 2. Nevertheless, she is looking forward to the release, like many others.
I can’t swim. Although: I don’t actually sink, but I don’t feel really safe in the water either. I can swim in principle, but not really long. Let’s say it’s one of those things I haven’t really skllled further.
It’s not surprising that I’m not a fan of the ocean, to say the least: I am afraid. After all, I can never know what is down there at my feet or what might be, and whether something might eventually pull me down into the depths.
However, I find it completely justified to be afraid of the depths of the sea. I mean – hello! – it’s deep (very deep!) and you don’t know what lurks down there. How can you not be afraid of that!?
Swimming isn’t really one of my hobbies, but the game Subnautica 2 does intrigue me somehow and is on my wishlist – like many others. Even though I have never played the first part, I still associate a lot with the game, which makes me excited for the sequel.
The gameplay consists of survival elements in an open world with a story about the planet.
You can get a first impression of the gameplay of the second part in the trailer:
Subnautica got me through my school years
Even though I never played Subnautica, I associate it with a certain time in my life, especially through Let’s Plays.
When the game started early access in 2014, it was an instant hit among some gaming YouTubers. After all, the concept for the game was unique: The entire gameplay takes place underwater. Something that had never happened before in a survival context.
At that time, I was also in early access regarding my high school diploma, meaning I was in the senior years of high school and had a stressful school time ahead of me. Various YouTubers like jacksepticeye or CoryxKenshin entertained me far too well during this phase with their Let’s Plays and constantly distracted me from studying.
Because the great advantage of Subnautica was: Although the story was the same everywhere, the individual biomes spawned in different ways, which is why the YouTubers discovered different things in their Let’s Plays. This had a high entertainment value for me.
The game thus holds a special place in my heart, even though I never swam in that alien ocean myself.

In 2026, I will dive into the ocean for the first time … INGAME!
Having watched countless Let’s Plays already, I knew what was going to happen in Subnautica and what the open world had to offer, so I had little interest in playing it myself. Moreover, I also lacked the means: At the time, I didn’t own a gaming PC with which I could play anything.
Now, over 10 years later, blessed with a high school diploma and a gaming PC, the long-awaited release of Subnautica 2 is just around the corner. And this time I want to experience the game myself! Perhaps it is also because I have never dived into Subnautica myself that I can hardly wait for the second part now.
The Subnautica games belong to the survival genre, but for me, it quickly transforms into a horror game. That thrill, elicited by my fear of the ocean, makes me curious about the game.
It may also be that Subnautica 2 is a good confrontation therapy for me when I’m forced to dive into the waters to gather resources. Or well, it might achieve the exact opposite due to the many different alien creatures.
Besides: I am generally curious how the second part will look. After all, the first part was released 12 years ago and it is the most wished for game on Steam (Source: SteamDB).
And who knows, maybe I will ultimately have to rely on Let’s Plays for Subnautica 2 because I am constantly struggling. The question of why other players are so excited about the second part, I have tried to answer in the following article: After 12 years, Subnautica 2 is finally coming – Why are so many excited about the game?
