Apparently, American wrestler and actor John Cena lives by the motto “one should stop when it’s most beautiful,” because right after his last championship, the 17-time world champion wants to say goodbye to WWE.
What did John Cena announce? The wrestler has become the 17-time world champion of WWE this year, thus also holding the record. However, this did not prevent him from making a certain decision: John Cena has decided that it is time to end his career as a wrestler.
The decision was not made in haste, but has developed over the years, as the wrestler stated in an interview with ESPN: “I had a lot of time to think about it. I started to reduce my full-time schedule in 2017. Now it’s the year 2025, so I had more than half a decade to think about how to proceed.”

John Cena Keeps His Promise
How did he come to this decision? John Cena reports in the interview with ESPN that this decision simply stands from a promise he made to the fans and himself at the beginning of his career: “I made a solid promise in my 20s: ‘If I am a step too slow, I will walk away. One must know when their own run is over, and leave with dignity. And I feel that I am a step too slow.”
In response to the interviewer’s (Daniel Cormier from ESPN) reaction, who still sees John Cena as a very good wrestler, the wrestler replies gratefully but honestly:
I really appreciate that, but I think a lot of what you saw in my 20s was strength and enthusiasm – and then wisdom slowly creeps in. (…) When you look at the performers today, it’s physically extremely demanding. And I simply don’t want someone to buy a ticket and feel cheated.

What does his future look like now? Just because John Cena is saying goodbye to his career at WWE doesn’t mean he is completely retiring. He will continue to appear as an actor in films and series.
