Fallout 76 offers some mechanics that are meant to make the game more challenging. One of them is the limitation of inventory. It can quickly become too full, making it difficult to move or fast travel. MeinMMO provides you with some tips to free up space and always have enough room for loot.
Why should I even clean up? In Fallout 76, your inventory is limited. You can’t just take as much as you want. While you have a storage box available to access and store all sorts of items, that also has a limit.
It’s especially frustrating when you already have limited space, and then certain rewards clutter up your inventory. It can happen quickly that you are overloaded and no workbench is in sight for salvage. Fast travel is also out of the question.
A solution is to clean your inventory from the ground up and then maintain a certain level of order. With a few rules to follow, you can do this quite easily, and you will rarely face the problem of a full inventory.
Isn’t there an easier way? Sure, if you want to save space easily, you can get an extra storage box just for junk with the Fallout 1st subscription, along with other benefits. However, that costs a regular fee.
In addition, there are backpacks for those who do not wear Power Armor, which can increase your capacity. But even then, it can happen quickly that you are overloaded or simply lose track.
With our tips, you should be able to keep your inventory clean without having to rely on the subscription. However, there’s nothing wrong with using both if you’re one of those hoarders who like to keep everything.
The right Perks and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes
What does that have to do with inventory? Perks can ensure that certain items in your inventory weigh less. The right perks are actually the most important tip for a free inventory. You can find out more in our list of all perks in Fallout 76.
S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes also play a subordinate but important role. You need the right values to equip the corresponding perks. Strength increases your carrying capacity by 5 per point.
Which perks should I use? There are some perks that are generally useful and some that can help you depending on the situation. These include:
- Travel Pharmacy (Strength) – Reduces the weight of chems
- Packrat (Strength) – Reduces the weight of junk
- Strong Back (Strength) – Increases carrying capacity
- Thru-Hiker (Agility) – Reduces the weight of food and drinks
There are additional perks that reduce the weight of certain types of weapons, armor, or ammunition by up to 90%. Particularly useful here are “Bears Strong” for heavy weapons that take up a lot of space, and “Portable Power” for Power Armors.
If you’re having trouble fitting the perks into your build, the new legendary perks can help you. With these, you can replace existing perks or simply gain additional S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points.
Sort your ammunition
What does that mean? Ammunition is something that is often overlooked in Fallout 76, but it is often the reason for an overly full inventory. If you carry too much and don’t know where it’s actually coming from, take a look at the ammunition category. For example, 1000 rounds of shotgun ammo already take up 6 capacity points and are quickly collected.
Since the ammunition converter has been introduced, you can easily trade useless ammunition for something you actually use. However, until then, it still clutters your inventory.
How do I sort correctly? As a rule of thumb, take only what you need to shoot. Rotate at most three or four types of ammunition so that you have replacements in case one weapon breaks or you run out of ammo for a weapon.
However, some types of ammunition are particularly heavy and are quickly overlooked. If you do not consciously collect or need them, you should always dispose of the following:
- Fusion cores
- Plasma cores
- Rockets
- Mini-nukes
- Railway nails
- Harpoons
- Arrows
- 40-mm grenades
Lighter ammunition can be carried easily even in large quantities. For example, if you like to play with heavy weapons, you can easily carry 10,000 rounds or more of your 5-mm bullets with the right organization. You can confidently do without perks like Bandolier.
Turn legendary armor and weapons into cash
Better gear is always a reason for joy and for many players an incentive to play at all. If something particularly nice with three stars drops, you tend to keep it “just in case it becomes important.”
Here’s the trap: Legendary gear does not appear when salvaged, so you cannot break it down into junk. If you don’t constantly check your inventory, those Legendaries can quickly get lost.
Some weapons weigh quite a bit, and even certain armors can weigh several kilos. They quickly clog up your inventory and cause you to become overloaded.
What do I do about it? Here there is only one method that surely isn’t easy: part with things you don’t need and be tough on yourself. Do you really need that Fatman, which has been sitting in the storage for 2 years, or does it just look cool and “maybe I could …”?
Be aware of which weapons and armors you really need and sort thoroughly. Everything you don’t use,take to the legendary trader and exchange it for caps or directly to the next vendor for caps.
Especially rare and strong gear can also be sold to other players, but farming Legendaries isn’t hard, and there is always a chance for the next “God Roll” or at least a strong alternative. Don’t cling too much to your loot.
Craft in bulk, but only the right ones!
What are bulk items? For better inventory management, most materials can be lumped together in bulk. This involves processing a certain quantity of the material at the crafting bench with plastic into a “bulk item”.
These are the only way to sell certain junk and also ensure that you have more space in your stash. However, this is only the case for certain items, as not every bulk item is lighter than the sum of its components.
Which ones should I craft? Some junk items become lighter if you want to store them in bulk. If you want to save space, you should only combine aluminum and lead.
If you plan to sell the junk, you can also process other materials. Otherwise, you should save the plastic to combine more aluminum and lead. Especially lead is important for crafting most ammunition, which is why you generally want to have a lot of it.
Grenades, mines, and food
What is the trap here? Explosives and food are often overlooked burdens that players carry and then forget, although they can weigh a lot. Particularly grenades and mines can quickly lead to overload due to their relatively high weight.
However, food and drinks can also be quite heavy if you do not use the Thru-Hiker perk. Especially meat and some prepared foods can push capacity to the limit.
How do I deal with it? With grenades and mines, it’s easy: use or sell them. As weapons for main use, they are generally only suitable to a limited extent, but they are quite useful for dealing some damage from a distance.
It’s just annoying with floater grenades, which cannot be sold and are also quite heavy. Just throw them away – or keep them. Project Lead Jeff Gardiner promised us in an interview that he will address the team directly regarding these grenades.
Food and drinks are a bit trickier. It depends on your play style. Depending on which perks you use, complement your build if possible with the right mutations. Some useful perks and mutations include:
- Braver Dog (Endurance perk) – Increases the effect of dog food
- Dromedary (Endurance perk) – Drinks quench thirst more
- Slow Metabolizer (Endurance perk) – Food satisfies more hunger
- Cannibal (Endurance perk) – Eating flesh satisfies more hunger
- Class Freak (Luck perk) – Reduces the downside of mutations
- Meat Eater (Mutation) – Meat has double effect, vegetables have none
- Herbivore (Mutation) – Vegetables have double effect, meat has none
- Packrat (Mutation) – Increases carrying capacity by 20 and improves jump height
Make sure that you use the Luck perk Strong Genes at rank 2 for the mutations. Otherwise, decontamination showers and RadAways will remove your mutations, and you may have wasted an expensive serum.
Tips for better overview and when overloaded
Finally, we have some tips for you to generally maintain better inventory management and temporarily alleviate the situation when you’re carrying too much:
- Throw away holotapes and notes – They clutter the overview and most of them are not unique anyway. For the story, they are really cool, but you’ll find most of them in Fallout 76 again where they previously lay in the world. Plans and recipes have even a not inconsiderable weight relative to their mass.
- Take a small supply of chems with you – Buffout, Bufftats, and other chems that increase your strength temporarily give you greater carrying capacity. This way, you can avoid the “overloaded” state and fast travel.
- Take a digger power armor or chassis with you – Power armors give you a bonus to carrying capacity. With the mod “Calibrated Shock Absorbers” for leg parts, the bonus is even greater, and the easily obtainable digger power armor is even designed specifically for this.
With these tips, you should have a freer inventory quickly with a little practice and discipline, which you can finally fill with new loot – for example, with the new weapons and armor from the upcoming “Steel Dawn” update. This also brings the Steel Brotherhood into the game, and that’s the best thing that can happen to Fallout 76.
