EA has announced that the development of the multiplayer game Anthem will be discontinued. There will be no Anthem Next. This news has caused a stir in the gaming community. Here’s what the readers of MeinMMO have to say about it.
This is the situation with Anthem: Yesterday, on February 24, Bioware announced in a blog post that work on Anthem will be discontinued. Until recently, a team of 30 developers had been working on a reboot, Anthem Next, for about a year and a half but it is now being shelved.
Instead, the developers will be reassigned to other projects at Bioware. They want to focus on Mass Effect and Dragon Age, according to Anthem Next head Christian Dailey.
The reactions in the gaming community and here on MeinMMO to the announcement were numerous and often emotional. We summarize what you have said on MeinMMO regarding EA’s decision.
Wasted potential and much disappointment
Although Anthem was heavily criticized upon release many of you apparently still hoped that the game would improve. In numerous comments under the article and on Facebook, the term “wasted potential” was often mentioned.
Some readers stated that the gameplay of Anthem was fun and that something really cool could have been made from it, provided there had been enough time and resources for it.
This group of readers was excited about a reboot and stated that they would have played it. Consequently, the disappointment was significant that nothing came of the announced 2.0 version of Anthem.
Such a shame, the gameplay was really great! The most unnecessary 70 € of my life! Not even the Avenger’s Project disappointed me as much as Anthem… […]

I really enjoyed the game at first! I spent countless hours on it. As they say, the game had real potential. It’s sad to hear that there won’t be a reboot after all.

The surprise over the discontinuation of Anthem’s development is relatively muted. After such a long period of silence from the developers, hopes for a resurrection of Anthem like Final Fantasy XIV are quite low.
I find it sad that another game with great potential has sunk. However, I’m not surprised. There hadn’t been much happening or anything compelling to keep my interest alive.

It really annoys me to have believed in the promise
Another part of the users is quite angry about the decision. In particular, the plan to polish and improve Anthem in a reboot had given some players hope.
This hope has now diminished after many months of waiting, and correspondingly, some of you have reached your breaking point. In some comments, there are therefore wishes for a large class-action lawsuit against EA for making false promises to customers.
I am really annoyed to have believed in the “promise” and to have spent a few euros in the shop. They should really be sued properly.

The disappointment is so great for some that they have decided not to purchase any more games from EA or Bioware.
Yes, that’s it for me and some friends. From now on, we will avoid every game from EA and Bioware. […] I’m glad I didn’t buy any in-game stuff. There are definitely people who will now be more upset about that.

Hopes and concerns for the future
The news about the discontinuation of Anthem has also sparked speculation about the future of the developer Bioware and their IPs. The studio is currently working on several games from their Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises.
Some comments express concern that the setback with Anthem could also impact Mass Effect and Dragon Age or even the developer studio itself.
Let’s just hope that they [Bioware] can maintain some stability with the upcoming Mass Effect. I don’t think they will mess up the remaster of the old titles, but if the announced sequel to the Mass Effect series becomes a flop too, then I see dark times ahead for Bioware.

Right decision!
Another segment is pleased that Anthem has now been discontinued. Bioware should return to its roots after the “failed experiment” and focus on what it has done well in the past: single-player games with a focus on story and roleplay.
