Warning: The following article spoils the plot of Episode 2 of Season 3 of House of the Dragon.
The first episode of the new season started with a bang. The fierce battle at the Gargle took place and claimed many lives. The new episode shows the consequences of this battle and how Rhaenyra continues to pursue the throne.
We will summarize for you what happened after the battle.
The Epilogue of a Naval Battle
What happens after the battle in Episode 1? Although Rhaenyra’s troops won the battle, it doesn’t feel that way to them. Her son Jace died due to Rhaena’s reckless use of Sheep Stealer. She has fled to the Vale and made a pact with Lady Jeyne Arryn to hide. In compensation, there’s a dragon in the Vale with Sheep Stealer.
Rhaenyra is suffering after the death of her son and is engulfed in grief. Meanwhile, Daemon celebrates the victory against the Lannister army together with the Starks and the troops of the Riverlands. Additionally, he falls out with Alys Rivers. If you’re wondering where Aegon II is, he is still on the run with Lord Larys.
Lord Corlys is on a beach with his granddaughter and his two bastards after the battle. He promises the two the name Velaryon, thus legitimizing them.
Meanwhile, Alicent is secretly preparing Rhaenyra’s return in King’s Landing as promised.
Daemon travels from the battlefield to Dragonstone to support Rhaenyra. Before that, he chats with his ex-girlfriend Mysaria about Rhaenyra’s feelings for Alicent.
The Master of Laws, Jasper Wyld, realizes that Alicent has betrayed the crown and confronts her. He intends to abuse her but is stopped and arrested by the Grand Maester and guards (and later killed by Daemon).
The way is clear for Rhaenyra.
The Return to the Throne
What lies ahead for Rhaenyra? Motivated by Daemon, Rhaenyra prepares for the flight to King’s Landing, defying her council. Thus, Rhaenyra, Daemon, Ulf, and Hugo travel there with their dragons and are not shot down by the guards thanks to Alicent’s preparations.
In the Red Keep, Daemon fights his way through a few soldiers. At the throne, they are then attacked by a larger group, but Daemon’s old friends from the City Watch come to help.
Meanwhile, Aemond flies with the dragon Vhagar to Harrenhal and kills everyone present, including Simon Kraft. He is injured, however. Lying on the ground, he is greeted by Alys Rivers.
Rhaenyra finally grabs the throne, and to his great delight, Daemon discovers a captured Otto Hightower in the cellar, whom Rhaenyra executes in the throne room.
The episode ends with Rhaenyra, crying on the Iron Throne, and guards bringing Alicent and her daughter Helaena in, who see Otto dead on the floor.
Even though Rhaenyra is now on the throne, her war is not yet over. In the upcoming episodes, she must first clean up and show how she asserts herself as queen.
